What’s in This Halloween Spiderweb Dip Recipe?
Here’s what you will need to make this 5 Layer Bean Dip recipe. (Scroll below to the printable recipe card for details and measurements.)
- Refried beans – Easy canned refried beans.
- Cream cheese (optional) – This adds a nice creamy touch mixed into the bean layer. It should be softened to room temperature for easier blending. You can simply omit this, if preferred.
- Chunky salsa – This is drained and gets mixed in with the beans. You can buy a jar at the store or make our salsa recipe. Make sure it is a chunky salsa and not thin, as it will make the layer runny. Use mild, medium, or hot salsa depending on your preference.
- Taco seasoning – We love our homemade taco seasoning, but a packet from the store is totally fine.
- Guacamole – Homemade guacamole is always best, though you can find it prepared at the store.
- Cheddar cheese – Shredded fresh off the block for best flavor, but pre-packaged is fine to save time.
- Pico de gallo – Our homemade Pico de gallo is made with tomatoes, onions, and jalapeno which provide so much more flavor than just tomatoes alone. You can however, just use diced Roma tomatoes, if preferred.
- Scallions – A subtle onion and peppery flavor and a nice pop of green color on top.
- Sour cream – Used to make the spiderweb.
- Black olives (optional) – Cut to look like spiders.
Recipe Variations
There are many variations on this classic dip recipe – there’s really no wrong way to make it! Here are some ways to change it up:
- ROTEL. The salsa can be replaced with ROTEL (mild diced tomatoes with green chilies).
- Ranch seasoning. 1 tablespoon of ranch seasoning can be mixed with the refried beans instead of taco seasoning for a different flavor.
- Lettuce. Add a layer of shredded lettuce.
- Taco meat. Add a layer of taco meat.
Serving Suggestions
While you can serve this spiderweb dip immediately, letting it chill for an hour or so will give the flavors in the bean layer time to meld. I typically serve this with tortilla chips, though Fritos are also a great option. Since there are several layers to the dip, I recommend getting the sturdier tortilla chips, not the ones that are super thin, as they’ll likely break while you scoop into the dip.
Storing Leftovers
I don’t recommend preparing this dip more than a day in advance. Once served and dipped into, leftovers should be tightly covered and kept in the fridge, then eaten with a couple days. Keep in mind that the guacamole can start to turn brown quickly once exposed to oxygen, and after a couple days the dip might get a little watery and the layers may begin to mix.
Leftover dip also makes a great nacho topping, a filling in burritos, or add it to a bed of lettuce for a taco salad.

- Sprinkle the cheese over the guacamole.
- Place sour cream in a small ziploc bag. Cut a tiny corner from bag; pipe in concentric circles onto the cheese layer, then straight lines to create the web.
- Next sprinkle the pico de gallo and scallions around the outer perimeter.

Then, slice the other two olives into 4 circular rings widthwise (discard the round ends of the olives). Cut the olive rings in half to create 8 curved legs. Place the halved olive on the spider web and arrange 4 olive "legs" on each side. Create another spider with extra olives, if you'd like.

Made this for a work potluck and everyone loved it – so easy and fun!
I swapped out the sour cream with Greek yogurt, great recipe thanks
This is so clever! Love this idea for a fun Halloween party that’s healthy!
I don’t even buy hummus more because I go through it too quickly. And then my supermarket cashiers look at me funny when I go back for more. But I do love it so. And I think this would be just the perfect pre-marathon week after work snack! With lots of pita chips. Carb-loading. At its finest.
I want to get all webby in that. Done.
Love everything about this dip! And I am so impressed with your web making skills!!
