Easy Tzatziki Sauce Recipe
Tzatziki is yet another homemade condiment that I absolutely adore. I make it regularly and use it on so many things, especially in the summertime when the temperatures are extremely high and we’re craving something light and cool. If you’ve got garden cucumbers, this sauce is a must!
What is Tzatziki Sauce?
Tzatziki (pronounced Tsaht-zee-kee), is a simple and light yogurt-based condiment, which is chilled and used as a dipping sauce or sandwich spread. Most people associate this sauce with Greek food and Gyros, but it’s popular all across the Mediterranean.
Tzatziki Sauce Ingredients
What’s in Tzatziki sauce? It’s made from yogurt, cucumber, garlic, lemon juice, salt, and fresh herbs – most commonly dill or mint. And in this case, also red onion. (Scroll down for exact measurements and detailed recipe card.)
Definitely! Even though it’s super creamy, the calorie count is low at only 12 calories for every 2 tablespoons and only 1 gram of fat.
No, this sauce is not vegan, since it’s yogurt based. You could make a dairy-free version using soy yogurt and straining it through a cheesecloth to thicken.
Yes! Low cal, low carb, and keto-friendly, so dunk those celery sticks in and eat up!
Greek yogurt is made by straining out the extra whey in regular yogurt, which produces a yogurt that’s thicker, creamier, and tangier than regular yogurt, so I prefer it. But I haven’t noticed much difference in texture between whole-fat, low-fat, or non-fat, so you can use any of those with great results.
How To Make Tzatziki Sauce
It’s so easy to make this condiment! You simply mix all of the ingredients in a bowl until combined. Taste and adjust the flavors to your liking. We like to drizzle the top with a little olive oil and a turn of freshly cracked pepper, for garnish. Enjoy with your choice of dippers.

What to Eat with Tzatziki Sauce?
This condiment is wonderful on Dolma (stuffed Grape Leaves), beef kofta kabobs, cheater beef gyros, salmon burgers, Falafel, grilled meats, roasted vegetables, salads, used as a dip for carrots and celery or smashed potatoes, or just served with toasted pita wedges.
Storing Leftovers
- How long will homemade Tzatziki sauce last? Leftovers will keep, in an airtight container in the refrigerator, for up to 3 days.
- Can you freeze Tzatziki sauce? You can, but I don’t really recommend it. Once thawed, it won’t have the same consistency as when you first made it. Cucumbers tend to get mushy in the freezer, and the lemon can cause the yogurt to curdle a bit.
