For those days my family is craving the rich, savory flavors of French onion soup, but I don’t have time to make it from scratch, this dry French onion soup mix comes to the rescue! It’s made from simple pantry seasonings and is easily transformed into a delicious broth-based soup when mixed with beef broth. It’s also a fun way to add flavor to other dishes, like French dip sandwiches, cranberry chicken, and mac and cheese. I promise you won’t ever go back to those store-bought packets once you try this easy recipe!

What’s in this Dry French Onion Soup Mix Recipe?

I bet you already have everything you need to make this homemade French onion soup mix on your seasoning rack! Scroll down to the recipe card below for the exact measurements.

  • Dried Minced Onion & Dried Minced Garlic: These are two prominent flavors in French onion soup, so they’re a must-have in this homemade mix. I love the texture they give when you use this mix to make soup (they rehydrate nicely!), and they also retain their flavor well in storage.
  • Onion Powder: I also add some onion powder for an extra punch of flavor. This helps to give the soup a richer, more concentrated onion taste.
  • Dried Parsley Flakes: Many store-bought French onion soup packets also contain parsley flakes, so I’ve included them in this recipe as well. They add color and a subtle herby flavor to the mix.
  • Paprika: Use regular paprika, not smoked.
  • Dried Thyme: I love the earthy smell and taste of dried thyme, and it’s a classic seasoning in French onion soup.
  • Ground Black Pepper: A little bit of black pepper adds a nice kick.

Variations to Try

I tested this dry mix a bunch of times, and I’m really happy with how the flavors turn out when you use the exact ingredient amounts listed below. However, you can absolutely use more or less of each ingredient to suit your own tastes.

You can also have fun with this recipe by adding extra flavors to your broth when you use this mix to make soup. I like to add one bay leaf per serving while simmering the broth for a more complex flavor. A dash of Dijon mustard is a great addition, too! As for the type of broth to use, I usually go for beef broth when I make this for my family, but any type of broth (beef, chicken, or vegetable) will work.

Helpful Tips for Success

  • Use dry ingredients. This mix isn’t meant to be used with fresh onion, garlic, or herbs. You’ll want to use dry ingredients for the best flavor and consistency. This also means your easy dry French onion soup mix will be shelf-stable.
  • Store in an airtight container. I highly recommend using a clean and dry mason jar to keep your soup mix nice and fresh. This recipe makes about 1 & 1/4 cups of soup mix, meaning your mason jar needs to hold at least 10 ounces. I also give my mason jars a good shake before using the mix, just to make sure everything is evenly distributed.
  • Adjust the salt content. Since most broths are already quite salty, I purposely didn’t add any salt to this recipe. However, feel free to add more salt to suit your tastes or use a lower sodium broth if desired.

Serving Suggestions

I’ve included instructions in the recipe card below on how to turn this dry French onion mix into a simple broth or mixed with sour cream for a creamy French onion dip. But that isn’t the only way to use this mix – we use it as an ingredient in French dip sandwiches and cranberry chicken. Or sprinkle it on top of oven roasted potatoes for extra flavor, add it to your pork tenderloin marinade, or use it as a seasoning in your favorite meatloaf recipe. It’s also extra delicious when mixed with mashed potatoes!

Proper Storage

Dried herbs can last a long time when stored in an airtight container in a cool, dark place. So long as the mix remains dry and isn’t exposed to heat or moisture, this soup mix should last for quite a while! Although, I recommend using your dry French onion soup mix within 6 months for the best flavor.

  • To make a simplified French Onion Soup broth, add 1 tablespoon of this dry mix to 4 cups of beef broth.* You can also combine 4 tablespoons of this mix with 16 ounces of sour cream for a creamy dip (which is the equivalent of Lipton packet.)
  • Taste, salt as needed (amount of salt depends on the broth you use.)

Notes

*I like to use Better Than Bouillon to save a little money and space, but it’s very salty. I didn’t need to add additional salt to my recipe for simple broth when using Better Than Bouillon’s beef flavor. I would taste as you go when it comes to adding any additional salt. (This mix is also a great way to add flavor to other dishes. Check the article for suggestions and proper storage.)

I like to make my own French Onion Dip. Can this be used in place of the package of Lipton Onion soup mix? If so, how much should I use?

    1. Amy@BellyFull says:

Absolutely, as mentioned in the recipe card, a packet of Lipton onion soup mix contains 4 tablespoons, so that’s what you would use.
