Everything But The Bagel Seasoning

Bagels were a staple in our house when I was growing up. But not the perfectly uniform, flavorless kind you find at the grocery store. My grandparents used to get the best, authentic bagels from Chicago and bring them up for every holiday – they would stock my momโ€™s freezer to get us through until their next visit. You havenโ€™t experienced a bagel until youโ€™ve had one from a mom and popโ€™s Chicago or NYC bakery!

One of my favorite bagels then and now is an Everything bagel, known for its everything seasoning blend that’s sprinkled on top. Everything Bagel Seasoning isn’t just great on bagels, though – my family loves it on scrambled eggs, pizza dough, popcorn, pasta, hash browns, a cheese ballโ€ฆand, well, everything.

Food brands picked up on its usefulness and started selling jars of it a few years ago, but I like to make it myself instead and use as much or as little as I want at a time. Seems like 1/4 cup lasts us about 2 weeks, depending how much I sprinkle on stuff. A little goes a long way.

What to put Everything Bagel Seasoning on

Everything Bagel Seasoning isn’t just great on bagels. A little can really jazz up other foods. My family loves to sprinkle it on scrambled eggs, pizza dough, stovetop popcorn, pasta, smashed potatoes and hash browns. It’s also great to use as a coating for cheese balls and one of our favorite components in our Hot Ham and Cheese Sliders.

How long is Everything but the Bagel Seasoning good for?

This blend is made up of individual ingredients that last a very long time, so once combined it’s really no different. Make the seasoning in bulk, then store in an airtight jar or other container in a cool dry place. If stored properly, the spice blend will last up to 6 months.

I love putting this on cubed cucumbers, tomatoes, and mozzarella to make a cool salad in the summertime. Uses the fresh harvest veggies. Let the mix set for a few minutes to let the dried ingredients rehydrate. Wonderful!

I also love the “everything topping”, it’s wonderful to now have a “make your own” recipe……I have been getting mine at kingarthurflour.com where I got the recipe for a no knead “everything bread” that is wonderful! No good bagel shops here either. I’m happy to have this recipe. Thanks for sharing!

Seriously, that is my #1 complaint about this area. There isn’t even a Noah’s let alone a real bagel place. Panera doesn’t cut it! I miss having 4 bagel shops in less than a mile radius in SF. :)

  9. Justine says:

Ok, this is just completely genius! I love everything bagels and the fact that I can make the seasoning blend myself and put it on everything I eat!? Best idea ever.

Girl. I bought a tiny jar of everything seasoning a few months ago and after rush shipping (because I obviously needed to make a cheeseball IMMEDIATELY), it cost me almost $15. Where were you with this recipe?! I already have all the ingredients.

  11. Amy H. says:

My guy would LOVE you for this! Everything bagels and onion bagels are his two favorites (closely followed by cheese). I just may have to surprise him with this sometime soon!
