(Scroll below to the printable recipe card for details and measurements.)
- Cheddar cheese – I highly recommend freshly shredded cheese for this recipe.
- Onion– Thinly sliced into rings.
- Creole seasoning – While you can make these with other seasonings (or no seasoning at all), I find that creole seasoning adds the perfect amount of flavor and heat.
- Candied jalapeño rings – Drained and patted dry. Our candied jalapenos add a touch of heat and also sweetness. Or you could use jarred pickled jalapeño rings from the store that aren’t sweet.
- Marinara sauce (optional) For dipping. Either our homemade marinara or your favorite store brand will work.

- Add the cheese. Coat a muffin top pan with nonstick spray. Add the shredded cheese to each circle.
- Add the onion rings. Add one slice of onion to each circle, followed by one or two pickled jalapeños on top of the onion. Sprinkle with a bit of creole seasoning.
- Bake. Bake at 375F for 10 to 14 minutes, until the edges begin to brown. (Watch them carefully, as they can go from done to burnt pretty quickly.)
- Cool. Remove from the oven, and let the cheddar chips cool in the muffin pan for a couple of minutes. Then transfer to paper towel-lined plates to drain and crisp up.
- Enjoy. Serve warm with marinara sauce for dipping, if desired.
Recipe Tips & Variations
Here are a few tips for making these cheddar onion chips, plus a few variations.
- Use freshly shredded cheese. It will give you optimal flavor and melting, compared to the pre-shredded packages of cheese.
- Try different cheese. You can replace the cheddar cheese with other desired cheese.
- Make sure the cheese is browning. It’s important to bake these until the cheese is bubbling and the edges are browning or they won’t be crispy.
- Cool in the pan first. If you try to remove the cheddar cheese chips from the pan immediately, you’ll just have melted cheese on your hands. Give it a few minutes to set so you can easily transfer it to the paper towel plate.
- Bake directly on parchment paper instead. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Mound portions of the cheese mixture, with 2 inches between. Flatten them slightly with the back of the spoon. Proceed with the written recipe.
Serving Suggestions
Cheddar onion rings make a great anytime snack. We love to dip them in marinara sauce though if you’re counting carbs you may just want to enjoy them as-is.
They’re also super delicious topped on a burger (whether it’s an onion burger, turkey burger, or chicken burger), just like you would a slice of onion.
Proper Storage
How Long Will Cheddar Onion Rings Stay Fresh? I recommend enjoying your cheddar onion chips the day they’re made for best crispness. However, they can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days.
