You all must have seen this apple pie smoothie coming! I mean, pie. Me. Me and pie. And after the carrot cake smoothie…DUH. It’s alright. I don’t mind being predictable when the outcome is this delicious. Unlike actual apple pie, which I only get two times a year (not ok!), I can easily make this every day (totally ok!)

Helpful Tips & Variations

  • Type of apple to use. I prefer honey crisp or pink lady for this apple apple pie smoothie. Other sweet varieties like fuji or gala are also good. Sweeter apples are more likely to hold their flavor than tart varieties, but you can use any type of apple for this smoothie recipe, so just pick your favorite!
  • Yogurt. I use vanilla Greek yogurt for its thicker texture and added protein, but regular vanilla yogurt is fine too.
  • Apple juice. Try to use a pure apple juice without sugar added.
  • Frozen apple. Using frozen fruit helps to naturally thicken up the smoothie and keep it cold. You can buy frozen apple, but it’s also very easy to freeze it yourself. See note below the recipe card.
  • Spices. I always have some homemade apple pie spice, so that’s what I use. If you don’t want to make it or buy it, you can use a combination of cinnamon, nutmeg, cardamom, and allspice in its place.
  • Caramel sauce. Just a little drizzle of caramel sauce takes this smoothie up 5 notches, but it is optional.
  • Pour in the liquids first. When making smoothies it’s best to pour any liquid in first, followed by the rest of the ingredients. Keeping the liquids on the bottom allows the blender to create a “vortex,” easily pulling down the fruit that is layered above it, and preventing it from getting caught in the blender’s blades. Start your blender on low and then increase to high speed.

This Apple Pie Smoothie has the flavor of an apple pie, transformed into a creamy breakfast drink!

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup cold apple juice, (*see note)
  • 5.3 ounce container vanilla Greek yogurt
  • 1 medium honey crisp apple, peeled, cored, diced, and frozen
  • 1/2 teaspoon apple pie spice
  • 1 teaspoon caramel sauce, optional, but recommended

Instructions

  • Place ingredients in a blender in the order listed.
  • Blend until combined and smooth.
  • Pour into a glass and enjoy!
  • *I typically freeze extra apple juice into ice cube trays and blend in a couple of those, as well. This helps to thicken the drink and also keep it cold.

How to Freeze Apples

  • Peel and core the apple, then cut into slices or small chunks.
  • To prevent browning, combine 1 cup of cold water with 1 tablespoon of lemon juice and soak the apple pieces in it for about 5 minutes. (If you squeeze the lemon juice directly on the apples, they will end up tasting really lemony.)
  • Drain the apple from the lemon juice bath and pat dry.
  • Arrange on a large baking sheet, without them touching.
  • Freeze for at least 4 hours, then transfer to a freezer-safe plastic bag to freeze completely. Label with the contents and date. Properly stored, frozen apples will maintain best quality for about 9 months in the freezer!

This is an awesome recipe! I have modified it though! Instead of frozen yogurt, I freeze vanilla almond yogurt. I remove it from the freezer about 1 – 1/2 hours before I plan on making the smoothie! I cut up the yogurt cut up the yogurt in the container if needed. Then I make my smoothie as per the recipe. This eliminates the dairy and also makes it a little purer! Comes out great!

That sounds wonderful. I’m going to have to make this for my dad and let him be the judge, though. He’s crazy about his apple pie. I might ad some graham cracker crumbs or something to it to mimic pie crust too.

I think the rootbeer/banana would be also good with a little Sugar Free Chocolate Syrup…like from Torani of DaVinci what they use in coffee shops….

Now I’m thinking I just need to turn all of my favorite desserts into smoothies…so I can declare them health foods and then eat them nonstop. (Hint – red velvet smoothie. Get on it.)
