Easy Apple Pie Shake
If you find yourself with leftover holiday apple pie, here’s a great way to use it up – turn it into a milkshake! Apple pie slices take on a new life in this easy milkshake, as they’re blended with whipped cream and ice cream for a smooth, creamy milkshake with ALL the flavors of apple pie, from the filling to the crust.
This apple pie shake has become a post-holiday treat for us. A slice of pie is great on its own, of course, but this is a next level way to enjoy it, and so easy. Or if you’re craving apple pie and don’t have time to bake it, try this shake with just apple pie filling. It’s rich, creamy, and thick – all things a perfect milkshake should be.
Ingredients Needed
This rich, creamy milkshake is made with real apple pie and just a handful of other ingredients.
(Scroll below to the printable recipe card for details and measurements.)
- Heavy whipping cream – The secret ingredient besides the apple pie itself to making these milkshakes so good is the addition of the whipped cream. It gives an added richness of flavor.
- Powdered sugar – For making the whipped cream.
- Vanilla – Adds flavor to the whipped cream.
- Vanilla ice cream – Whatever your favorite brand is! Regular vanilla or French vanilla both work.
- Whole milk – 2% or skim are fine, but the milkshake will not be as rich or thick.
- Apple pie – Yes, this apple pie shake is made with REAL apple pie. You use the entire apple pie, including the crust. It adds incredible flavor. I love using leftover homemade apple pie.
- Apple pie spice – Adding apple pie spice enhances the apple pie flavor and ensures every sip of this milkshake tastes incredible.
Recipe Variations
Here are a few variations on this rich and decadent homemade milkshake recipe. Like what to do if you don’t have any apple pie leftovers on hand.
- Use your favorite store-bought or homemade apple pie. Just make sure that if it needs to be baked first to do that step, then let it come down to room temperature first before making the milkshake.
- Use apple pie filling instead of apple pie. In a pinch, you can use 8 ounces of apple pie filling. You will not get the flavor from the crust, but it’s still super delicious!
- Use store-bought whipped cream. You can use store-bought canned whipped cream or whipped topping in place of the heavy whipping cream, powdered sugar, and vanilla extract if preferred.
How to Make Apple Pie Milkshake
This apple pie shake is ridiculously easy to make and requires just a few minutes.
(Scroll below to the printable recipe card for details and measurements.)
- Make the whipped cream. Beat the heavy cream, powdered sugar, and vanilla until stiff peaks form.
- Blend the ingredients. Blend the ice cream, half of the whipped cream, milk, apple pie, and cinnamon in a high-power blender until smooth.
- Enjoy. Divide the milkshake between glasses, top with the remaining whipped cream, then garnish as desired, and serve.
How to Achieve the Perfect Milkshake Thickness
You want to make sure you blend the shake well so there are no lumps from the pie. This could result in a thinner shake. If you like a thick shake, add more ice cream, or don’t add milk – although if you don’t add any milk, you may need to pulse the blender and stir it with a spoon to get it going.
Topping Ideas
Want to take this apple pie milkshake truly over the top? Try adding some fun toppings like a small slice of pie, extra apple pie spice, cinnamon sticks, caramel sauce, or pie crust decorations (like the ones used to decorate our pumpkin slab pie.)
Serving and Storage
While the baked pie can (and should) be made ahead of time, so it can cool completely, the shake itself should be made and served right away. Any leftovers need to be stored in the fridge but note that they will melt to a liquid so while it will taste yummy, it won’t have the thick milkshake texture.
