Air Fryer Asparagus Recipe
We’ve become fans of air fryer brussels sprouts and air fryer beets, so I figured why not take my roasted asparagus recipe and try it in the air fryer. Just like that recipe, this one is low calorie, low carb, and fit for a dinner party. But the best part is that air fryer asparagus takes less than 10 minutes so it’s perfect for busy weeknights too!
Ingredients Needed
All you need is asparagus, olive oil, and some seasonings to make this easy asparagus recipe!
(Scroll to the bottom for our easy printable recipe with the complete directions.)
- Asparagus – You’ll want to use fairly large stalks for this recipe and trim before cooking.
- Olive oil – Helps the seasonings stick to the asparagus.
- Seasonings – I use a simple combination of equal parts garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper for this recipe. (Some other seasoning ideas include chili powder, cumin, lemon pepper, Italian seasoning, or seasoning salt.)
- For serving – Freshly grated parmesan and fresh lemon juice make the asparagus flavor pop.
How to Trim Asparagus
Before cooking asparagus, it’s important to properly trim the asparagus. Here’s how:
- Wash and dry. First, rinse and dry the asparagus.
- Snap off the “woody” end. Then, run your fingers up the bottom until you feel where the texture changes. The color will also likely change from a light to dark green. Then just bend back the bottom and it should snap right off.
- Trim. If you want to make sure all the pieces are symmetrical, you can either line the asparagus up and trim where you cut them or skip snapping them and just trim with a knife at the end of the woody part.

How Long to Cook Asparagus in Air Fryer?
It takes 5 to 6 minutes at 400 degrees F to perfectly cook this asparagus in the air fryer. If you have a smaller air fryer or the asparagus is crowded, it may take an extra minute or two. Alternatively, if you have thin stalks of asparagus, they will likely need just 4 or so minutes in the air fryer. This can vary based on the air fryer model you have – like ovens, all air fryers run differently.
Tips & Variations
For the best asparagus side dish, keep these tips in mind.
- Use an oil that can be cooked at high heat. Olive oil or avocado oil are good choices.
- Trim the asparagus. Always trim the asparagus (see above) before cooking. The woody parts taste awful and are not worth cooking!
- The thickness of asparagus will affect the air fry time. Reduce cooking time if using thin asparagus, since it will cook quicker.
- Cook in a single layer. It’s important to not crowd the air fryer when making these or any other air fryer vegetables. It’s better to cook these in 2 batches than crowd the air fryer as they won’t cook evenly.
Serving Suggestions
Be sure to serve your air fryer asparagus hot. I like to top mine with some freshly grated parmesan and a squeeze of fresh lemon juice. A side of sriracha aioli or a lemon aioli is also delicious drizzled over the top of the cooked asparagus, or use it for dipping.
This makes a great side dish for many recipes. Here are a few of my favorite dishes to serve with this easy asparagus recipe:
How to Store & Reheat Leftovers
Store any leftover asparagus in the fridge for up to 5 days. I highly recommend reheating it in the air fryer as the microwave may make it a bit mushy. It should take just a few minutes to reheat in the air fryer.
