These sweet potato fries can be made in an air fryer or baked in the oven. Wedges of sweet potatoes are coated in a bit of oil and tossed with spices, making them a fantastic sweet, salty, and smoky snack or side dish.
There’s a burger joint not too far from our house that we frequent a couple times a month – definitely for their awesome burgers, but also for their sweet potato fries. My son and I will choose them over regular French fries any day.
Since so many restaurants are closed right now, I’ve been whipping up batches of homemade sweet potato fries. Sweet, salty, and a little smoky, and so easy to make in your air fryer or oven!
How to Make Sweet Potatoes Fries – Air Fryer
This sweet potato fries recipe is so easy to make. Simply peel 1 large or 2 medium sweet potatoes, cut them into wedges, toss with a little olive oil, salt, and chili powder, then air fry until browned and crispy! (Scroll down for the complete printable recipe.)
- If your air fryer requires preheating, do that now at 375 degrees F for 5 minutes.
- Peel and cut the sweet potatoes into 1/4-1/2 inch wide sticks.
- In a large bowl, add the cut sweet potatoes, olive oil, salt, and chipotle powder. Toss to combine.
- Place the sweet potato fries into the air fryer basket (it’s okay if they are touching.)
- Air fry for 10 minutes. Shake the basket to mix up the fries and air fry an additional 5 minutes.
- Serve with a sprinkle of chopped fresh parsley and your favorite dipping sauce.
If you really want your fries to get crispy, air fry in batches so the sweet potato wedges are in a single layer and don’t overlap at all.
NOTE: These fries were made and tested in a Phillips model Air Fryer with a basket and requires preheating. If you own a different model air fryer, I would suggest doing a test run with just a few and then adjust the time/temp, if necessary. Air fryers are all similar, but just like ovens, cooking times can vary.
Baked Sweet Potato Fries – Oven
If you don’t have an air fryer and want to bake these in the oven instead, no problem!
- Preheat your oven to 425 degrees F with a rack in the upper position (make sure it is 6 inches from the heat source.)
- Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper of lightly coat with nonstick spray.
- Place fries on the baking sheet in a single layer.
- Bake for 15 minutes, then using a spatula, flip the fries. Rearrange again so that the fries are evenly spaced and not overlapping. Then bake for another 10-15 minutes, or until the fries are crispy and have started to brown a bit on the tips.
(If you are doubling this recipe, you will need two baking sheets, placed in the lower and upper positions, so that the fries have plenty of space and not overlapping, and rotate sheets halfway through cooking time.)
How to Cut Sweet Potato Fries
If you’ve got a fry cutter, use that! But if you’ve using a sharp knife, no problem.
Rest the sweet potato on its side on a sturdy clean cutting board. Slice off a 1/4? thick slab from one of the sides, lengthwise. Then rotate the sweet potato onto the flat side to make it more stable. Continue cutting the sweet potato into wedges, and then cut the wedges into thin sticks.
Are Sweet Potato Fries Healthy?
Unlike their popular cousin deep-fried French fries, air fryer sweet potato fries actually have some valuable nutritional benefits. They’re loaded with vitamin A and also a good source of vitamin C, E, and B6. Plus, they’re full of antioxidants and fiber, and have some beneficial attributes for regulating blood sugar.
Frying sweet potatoes are wonderful of course, but baked sweet potato fries and air fried sweet potatoes are lower in fat and calories because you’re not using cornstarch or oil.

Sweet Potato Fries Dipping Sauce
These fries are wonderfully sweet and salty on their own, but we love to enjoy ours with a dipping sauce, as well. Try any of these combinations and adjust to taste.
- 1/4 cup sour cream, 1/4 cup light mayonnaise, and 1 1/2 teaspoons Sriracha sauce
- 1 cup mayonnaise, 1 tablespoon lemon juice, 3 cloves grated garlic, and 1/2 tablespoons smoked paprika
- 1/4 cup mayonnaise, 1/4 cup spicy brown mustard, and 2 tablespoons maple syrup
