If you love traditional banana pudding, you’re going to love this walking banana pudding recipe. It’s such a fun, quick, and easy dessert that is perfect for relaxing by the pool, going to the beach, or camping!

Made with banana pudding, homemade whipped cream, and banana slices in individual bags of Nilla wafers, this banana pudding dessert is like a sweet version of my traditional savory walking tacos. They’re perfect for those occasions where not everyone is able to sit at a table and/or you don’t want a ton of dirty dishes later.

Plus, they’re super easy to prepare and assemble. You can have these ready to enjoy in just 20 minutes and they have all the great flavors of classic banana pudding, without the wait.

    Helpful Tips & Variations

    • Banana cream pudding. Be sure to use INSTANT pudding, not the cook and serve. If you want to make your own homemade pudding you can do that as well. I love using this homemade banana pudding recipe.
    • Nilla wafers. Buy the 1 ounce individual packages. You can also use the Nilla wafers that are sold in containers (instead of bags) for a sturdier hold.
    • Bananas. You want bananas that are ripe but not brown for this recipe.
    • Switch up the pudding flavor. Vanilla or even chocolate pudding can be used instead of banana pudding if preferred.
    • Use prepared ingredients. For a super quick shortcut, Snack Pack pudding can be used instead of boxed or homemade pudding and you can also use Cool Whip or Reddi Whip instead of homemade whipped cream.

    Walking Banana Pudding

Walking Banana Pudding makes a fun, quick, and easy portable dessert that's perfect for summer. This no bake dessert is made with just 6 ingredients, featuring all the flavors of classic banana pudding.

    Ingredients

    • 1 box (3.4 ounce) Instant banana cream pudding
    • 2 cups cold whole milk
    • 1 cup cold heavy whipping cream
    • 3 tablespoons powdered sugar
    • 2 ripe bananas, thinly sliced
    • 12 individual packages (1 ounce each) mini Nilla Wafers

    Instructions

    • In a large mixing bowl, combine the instant pudding and milk. Whisk vigorously for 2 minutes until thickened, then place in the fridge for 5 minutes to set.
    • While the pudding chills, in another bowl combine the heavy whipping cream and powdered sugar. With an electric mixer, beat until stiff peaks have formed.
    • Using scissors, carefully cut the top across the seam of the mini Nilla wafer packs.
    • Top the cookies with a spoonful of pudding, some sliced bananas, and then a spoonful of whipped cream. Finish with a couple Nilla wafers and banana slices or crushed cookie crumbs for presentation, if desired.
(TIP! This is easier if you have a tray or baking dish with higher sides so you can stand them up while filling. It's also a great way to serve them to a group.)
    • Serve with some disposable spoons for virtually no clean-up!

    Notes

Layering the ingredients. When assembling these, layering the pudding directly on top of the cookies allows them to soften faster. If you prefer crunchier cookies, layer banana slices directly on the cookies, then the pudding and whipped cream.
Switch up the pudding flavor. Vanilla or even chocolate pudding can be used instead of banana pudding if preferred.
Make it even quicker! For a super quick shortcut, Snack Pack pudding can be used instead of boxed or homemade pudding and you can also use Cool Whip or Reddi Whip instead of homemade whipped cream.

How to Make Walking Banana Pudding

    1. Make the pudding. Vigorously whisk 2 cups cold milk and 1 box (3.4 oz) instant banana cream pudding for 2 minutes, then place in the fridge for 5 minutes to set and chill.
    2. Make the whipped cream. In another bowl, beat 1 cup cold heavy whipping cream and 3 tablespoons powdered sugar until stiff peaks form.
    3. Prepare the Nilla wafers. Carefully cut each pack of Nilla wafers across the top.
    4. Assemble the dessert. Top the cookies in the bag with a spoonful of pudding, a few sliced bananas, and a spoonful of whipped cream. Finish with a couple extra cookies and sliced banana (or crushed cookie crumbs), if desire. If you can, I recommend standing them up in a baking dish with higher sides to make this step easier.
    5. Enjoy! Serve immediately and enjoy.

    Serving Suggestions

I like to add a few more Nilla wafers on top of each walking banana pudding for presentation and then serve these with disposable spoons, for less work on my part later. Then everyone can walk, talk, and enjoy anywhere.

One thing to note when assembling these is that layering the pudding and whipped cream directly on top of the cookies allows them to soften faster. If you prefer crunchier cookies, layer banana slices directly on the cookies, then the pudding and whipped cream.

Can These Be Prepared in Advance?

Walking banana pudding is not ideal for preparing in advance, as the bananas will brown quickly and the layers may all blend together, plus the wafers will get too soft. I recommend serving this treat immediately after assembly.

If you need to take a shortcut, you could prepare the bags in advance by opening them, folding the “collar”, and returning a few Nilla wafers to each one.
