5 STAR REVIEW

If you can’t go to Disneyland and get a Dole Whip, you can easily make it at home! This luscious, creamy treat is a summer favorite, but can be enjoyed all year when your sweet tooth comes calling, because the recipe uses frozen pineapple.

What is Dole Whip?

Dole Whip is a pineapple-flavored soft-serve ice cream. It was originally created by the fruit company, Dole, but became available at Disneyland’s Tiki Bar in 1986. It’s now served at a few different locations in the park and also across the country, but pretty synonymous with Disneyland. It’s practically achieved a cult following as visitors to Disney will wait in a very long line just to get one on a hot day.

The dole whip you get at the Disney parks is now vegan made with a non-dairy creamer, sugar, and natural flavoring and coloring, but the original was made with pineapple juice, frozen pineapple chunks, vanilla ice cream. My recipe is modeled after the original with ice cream and is as close to the authentic flavor as you’ll get!

Helpful Tips

  • You will need a pretty powerful blender for best results, since frozen pineapple can be hard to pulse. I love my Vitamix! Ninja and Blendtec will also get the job done. If you have a regular blender, let the pineapple thaw out slightly.
  • Get that iconic Dole Whip swirl. You’ll need to freeze the mixture for about 30-40 minutes, then transfer to a piping bag with a 1M โ€œstarโ€ tip. If you feel like your skin is getting a bit of freezer burn while piping, wrap a towel around the piping bag.

Dole Whip Recipe (Disney Copycat)

Prep: 5 minutes
Chill: 30 minutes
Total: 35 minutes
Servings: 2
This Disney Dole Whip Recipe is a sweet, frosty fruit treat easily made at home when you can't get to the parks, and the perfect dessert to cool off on a hot summer day.

Ingredients

  • 4 ounces pineapple juice
  • 1 big scoop vanilla ice cream, (about 3/4 cup)
  • 2 cups frozen pineapple chunks
  • 2 tablespoons sugar, , optional but recommended
  • splash of lemon juice
  • pinch of salt

Instructions

  • Combine all the ingredients in a high-powered blender (in the order listed); blend until smooth and ultra creamy, pushing down the pineapple chunks if necessary, about 3 minutes.
  • At this point you can pour into dessert cups. But I like to freeze the mixture for 30-40 minutes, then transfer to a piping bag with a 1M โ€œstarโ€ tip (to get that iconic Dole Whip swirl.)
  • Swirl into glasses.
  • (To help the soft-serveย hold its shape even longer, freeze the swirled whip another 20 minutes.)

Notes

Can I make this dairy free? Yep. The original dole whip served at the parks included ice cream, but is actually dairy free now. Just swap out the ice cream with 1/3 cup coconut milk to make this a dairy free, vegan treat.
Convert the Dole Whip into a Dole Whip Float! Simply fill a glass halfway with pineapple juice, followed by some Dole Whip, and top it off with a maraschino cherry.
Make it with different fruits. If you’re not a pineapple lover, this can be made with pretty much any frozen fruit and its accompanying fruit juice, like strawberry, lemon, orange, raspberry, or mango.

I was thinking of taking this on a camping trip…would I be able to make it in advance and keep it frozen ? How do you think it would turn out? I’d be making it for 10 ppl.

    1. Amy@BellyFull says:

Yes, you can make it ahead of time and keep it frozen (although it will be too solid to pipe it.) This recipe only makes enough for 2, so you’ll need to make it in batches for 10 people.

Dole Whip is absolutely phenomenal. We spent a month in Hawaii and couldn’t get enough of it. Since being back, i have made this recipe 3 times now. I used breyers vanilla and costco vanilla but haven’t quite duplicated the same flavor profile. I will keep tweaking the recipe until I get it perfected.
I can’t wait to try it with the coconut milk also.

This absolutely hit the spot on a blazing hot humid day here in the midwest.

  6. Lori says:

Do you use sweetened or unsweetened pineapple juice
And can you use less fat ice cream

  7. ConKeen says:

Could I put this in my ice cream machine?

    1. Amy @BellyFull says:

I’ve never tested this recipe in an ice cream machine, so I don’t know.

Could only blend it for about 2 minutes before my blender died. Still worth it. I needed a new blender anyway.

This was easy and delicious! I only have an immersion blender so I added a splash of milk to make it more blendable. Froze it for an additional 20 min before eating. Great recipe!

  14. April says:

Can you make this ahead a few hours?

    1. Amy@BellyFull says:

Sure! Just allow it to soften slightly at room temp before serving or it will be difficult to eat with a spoon.

  15. Jessica says:

Can i use pinapple chunks that are not frozen?

    1. Amy@BellyFull says:

Of course! It’ll just be more like a smoothie and not Dole Whip.

  16. Debbie says:

Canโ€™t wait to try this when my granddaughters come to visit. How many does this recipe make.

Replying to my own comment because I donโ€™t know how to revise it. ? I was trying to say that your recipe was the only one I came across that didnโ€™t require making your own ice cream. Itโ€™s not necessary at all!! After visiting Disneyland last week and having two dole whips, Iโ€™ve been craving them ever since. And this recipe has the same flavor as the one at the park. Maybe the consistency isnโ€™t exact, but they use stabilizers to get that whipped effect. Thank you for sharing and proving that store bought vanilla ice cream creates the same taste just like the park version without having to bother with homemade ice cream. I added a bit of OJ and whipped cream as well and it was fantastic!!

Wonderfully easy frozen dessert for summer – felt like I was standing in downtown disney while my girls and I enjoyed this. Thank you for sharing!

  24. Beth says:

Have you tried other fruits? My family isnโ€™t huge on pineapple. Iโ€™m not good at substituting ingredients. Any advice/recommendations?

    1. Hugh Janus says:

You can try it with strawberry or pretty much any fruit enjoy

    2. J Morgan says:

Why would you even take a glance at this recipe then????it’s literally pineapple whip ???

    3. Renee says:

We use pureed watermelon berries and heavy whipping cream in our ice cream maker. All sugar from melon so it’s no added sugar. We made it that way since we saw recipe in Ladies home journal in about 99. One of my now chef sons first cooking attempts. Best with blueberries or strawberries..

  32. J. Rose says:

Could “a person” add vodka for an adult treat? Any idea how much vodka could be added without the final product becoming too watery? Thank you!

    1. Amy @Belly Full says:

You could definitely add some vodka. Since everyone has a different tolerance level, I can’t say for sure how much you should add, but 1 ounce alcohol to an 8 ounce serving is a good general rule to start with. Taste and adjust from there.

    2. Tiki King says:

      5 stars
Iโ€™d recommend using rum rather than vodka, particularly Malibu coconut rum, which is a nice combination.

  33. T K Gray says:

I enjoyed this so much ! Pineapple has become a staple in my pantry for a quick easy fun desserts beverage.

  34. Kathy Graves says:

Can you use fresh pineapple instead of frozen chunks?

    1. Amy @Belly Full says:

If you want a smoothie, sure. But for Disney Dole Whip you need frozen pineapple.

      1. Marcia L says:

Can I used canned pineapple chunks and freeze them or is buying already frozen better?

        1. Amy @Belly Full says:

Canned is fine, just make sure to pat dry so there’s no excess moisture.

Best dole whip recipe by far!! I’m so excited this was the perfect combination of ingredients to make the classic pineapple dole whip. Especially as southern California is still in lockdown mode and no Disneyland, I’m so happy I can recreate the deliciousness at home!
