The iconic Disney Pineapple Dole Whip can easily be made at home with only a few simple ingredients! This sweet, frosty fruit treat is the perfect dessert to cool off on a hot summer day.
If you can’t go to Disneyland and get a Dole Whip, you can easily make it at home! This luscious, creamy treat is a summer favorite, but can be enjoyed all year when your sweet tooth comes calling, because the recipe uses frozen pineapple.
What is Dole Whip?
Dole Whip is a pineapple-flavored soft-serve ice cream. It was originally created by the fruit company, Dole, but became available at Disneyland’s Tiki Bar in 1986. It’s now served at a few different locations in the park and also across the country, but pretty synonymous with Disneyland. It’s practically achieved a cult following as visitors to Disney will wait in a very long line just to get one on a hot day.
Dole Whip Ingredients
There are only a few ingredients needed to make this! Pineapple juice, frozen pineapple chunks, vanilla ice cream, lemon juice, salt, and sugar (which is optional.)
The real Disneyland Dole Whip is vegan now, made with a non-dairy creamer, sugar, and natural flavoring and coloring. But when Disney recently released their recipe to the world, due to the parks being closed, it was merely 3 ingredients – pineapple juice, frozen pineapple chunks, vanilla ice cream.
This at-home version uses real ingredients and is as close to the authentic flavor as you’ll get!
Can I make this dairy free?
Yes! You can swap out the ice cream with 1/3 cup coconut milk to make this a dairy free, vegan treat.
Recipe Tips!
- You will need a pretty powerful blender for best results, since frozen pineapple can be hard to pulse. I love my Vitamix! Ninja and Blendtec will also get the job done. If you have a regular blender, let the pineapple thaw out slightly.
- Convert the Dole Whip into a Dole Whip Float! Simply fill a glass halfway with pineapple juice, followed by some Dole Whip, and top it off with a maraschino cherry.
- To get that iconic Dole Whip swirl, you’ll need to freeze the mixture for about 30-40 minutes, then transfer to a piping bag with a 1M “star” tip.
- If you feel like your skin is getting a bit of freezer burn while piping, wrap a towel around the piping bag.
- Not a pineapple lover? You can make it with pretty much any frozen fruit and its accompanying fruit juice, like strawberry, lemon, orange, raspberry, or mango.

Dole Whip (Disney Copycat)
Ingredients
- 4 ounces pineapple juice
- 1 big scoop vanilla ice cream (about 3/4 cup)
- 2 cups frozen pineapple chunks
- 2 tablespoons sugar , optional but recommended
- splash of lemon juice
- pinch of salt
Instructions
- Combine all the ingredients in a blender (in the order listed); blend until smooth and ultra creamy, pushing down the pineapple chunks if necessary, about 3 minutes.
- At this point you can pour into dessert cups. But I like to freeze the mixture for 30-40 minutes, then transfer to a piping bag with a 1M “star” tip (to get that iconic Dole Whip swirl.)
- Swirl into glasses.
- (To help the soft-serve hold its shape even longer, freeze the swirled whip another 20 minutes.)
Dole Whip is absolutely phenomenal. We spent a month in Hawaii and couldn’t get enough of it. Since being back, i have made this recipe 3 times now. I used breyers vanilla and costco vanilla but haven’t quite duplicated the same flavor profile. I will keep tweaking the recipe until I get it perfected.
I can’t wait to try it with the coconut milk also.
This absolutely hit the spot on a blazing hot humid day here in the midwest.
Do you use sweetened or unsweetened pineapple juice
And can you use less fat ice cream
Could I put this in my ice cream machine?
I’ve never tested this recipe in an ice cream machine, so I don’t know.
Loved it! This is the original way Disney sold it before going dairy free. We like it better.
We love dole whip from Disney and this was a great copy!
Both my husband and I loved this recipe. It’s a keeper!
Made this for my grand babies who love Disney. It was easy and really hit the spot on a humid day.
Could only blend it for about 2 minutes before my blender died. Still worth it. I needed a new blender anyway.
This was easy and delicious! I only have an immersion blender so I added a splash of milk to make it more blendable. Froze it for an additional 20 min before eating. Great recipe!
Can you make this ahead a few hours?
Sure! Just allow it to soften slightly at room temp before serving or it will be difficult to eat with a spoon.
Can i use pinapple chunks that are not frozen?
Of course! It’ll just be more like a smoothie and not Dole Whip.
Can’t wait to try this when my granddaughters come to visit. How many does this recipe make.
This is so good!!! Easy and perfect for summer
Has anybody tried using a food processor?
This is the original version – they now make it dairy free. But this version is so good.
Can you use vanilla yogurt instead of ice cream?
Thank you for using ready made ice cream!!
Replying to my own comment because I don’t know how to revise it. ? I was trying to say that your recipe was the only one I came across that didn’t require making your own ice cream. It’s not necessary at all!! After visiting Disneyland last week and having two dole whips, I’ve been craving them ever since. And this recipe has the same flavor as the one at the park. Maybe the consistency isn’t exact, but they use stabilizers to get that whipped effect. Thank you for sharing and proving that store bought vanilla ice cream creates the same taste just like the park version without having to bother with homemade ice cream. I added a bit of OJ and whipped cream as well and it was fantastic!!
This was perfect. I have tried similar Dole whip recipes but this was the best. Thank you
Can this be made ahead and kept in the freezer for a few days?
Wonderfully easy frozen dessert for summer – felt like I was standing in downtown disney while my girls and I enjoyed this. Thank you for sharing!
Have you tried other fruits? My family isn’t huge on pineapple. I’m not good at substituting ingredients. Any advice/recommendations?
You can try it with strawberry or pretty much any fruit enjoy
Why would you even take a glance at this recipe then????it’s literally pineapple whip ???
We use pureed watermelon berries and heavy whipping cream in our ice cream maker. All sugar from melon so it’s no added sugar. We made it that way since we saw recipe in Ladies home journal in about 99. One of my now chef sons first cooking attempts. Best with blueberries or strawberries..
Perfect summer treat!! I’ve been craving dole whip for months and finally found a good recipe that’s creamy and not icy! I will be making this over and over!
Can you make this with an ice cream freezer
This recipe is amazing! It’s so good and tastes like the exact thing!
We just returned a month ago from a magical Disney World trip that included numerous Dole Whips! I’m going to give this a whirl as a surprise. How long can this be frozen before eating?
This was perfect! We’ve been missing Disney and this helped. My girls and I loved it.
The BEST flavor, especially to cool down in the warm days with the Grandkids. I have many memories of going to Disneyland and this was one thing I had to have!
Many thanks for sharing the recipe – felt like we were at Disneyland in the winter. Can’t wait to go back!
Could “a person” add vodka for an adult treat? Any idea how much vodka could be added without the final product becoming too watery? Thank you!
You could definitely add some vodka. Since everyone has a different tolerance level, I can’t say for sure how much you should add, but 1 ounce alcohol to an 8 ounce serving is a good general rule to start with. Taste and adjust from there.
I’d recommend using rum rather than vodka, particularly Malibu coconut rum, which is a nice combination.
I enjoyed this so much ! Pineapple has become a staple in my pantry for a quick easy fun desserts beverage.
Can you use fresh pineapple instead of frozen chunks?
If you want a smoothie, sure. But for Disney Dole Whip you need frozen pineapple.
Can I used canned pineapple chunks and freeze them or is buying already frozen better?
Canned is fine, just make sure to pat dry so there’s no excess moisture.
We haven’t been able to go to Disney in 2 years and the kids have been asking for all the treats we’ve been missing. Found this recipe and it was perfect!
We haven’t been able to get to Disneyland due to Covid, so this was our little escape. Came out perfectly – thank you!
Can I use homemade vanilla ice cream?….the 2 ingredient kind?
Thanks!
Sure!
Can I just put it in a container instead of swirling it into cups?
Absolutely.
I’ve never been to Disney . When we lived in Southern California we were only 45 minutes away and we still didn’t go. Now I know what I’ve being missing out on.
This was so good & super refreshing . I love anything with pineapple so it’s definitely a repeat for me !
Good Stuff – A great summer treat
So yummy!
We’ve been missing Disney so much during Covid and can’t wait for the parks to open back up. Found this recipe. It transported me back there for a few minutes – spot on recipe, thank you!
We went to Disney last year and completely fell in love with the Dole Whip. This tasted very close to the real deal. Excellent recipe!! Thank you for sharing.
This was perfect – exactly what I’ve been craving. We miss Disneyland! *cries*
This tasted JUST like when we get it at Disney!! My kids and I THANK YOU!!
I Love this Dole Whip recipe!
What machine did you use to make the soft swirl effect?
Hi Winn – No machine. I explain how to get the swirl in step 2 of the instructions. You can also watch the video for help. Thanks!
Loved this, thanks for sharing!
It was delicious!
This treat sounds delicious! I know fresh pineapple would be the best flavor, but have you ever tried freezing pineapple chunks that came in a can?
Looks delicious, I appreciate the non dairy version as well. Can’t wait to make it.
Will have to try this
Looks delicious. Now I just need a blender for all the smoothie recipes you are posting!
Best dole whip recipe by far!! I’m so excited this was the perfect combination of ingredients to make the classic pineapple dole whip. Especially as southern California is still in lockdown mode and no Disneyland, I’m so happy I can recreate the deliciousness at home!
