Easy Crescent Roll Pigs in a Blanket

Pigs in a blanket are a classic party appetizer; they’re quick and easy to make and loved by everyone. While technically you only need two ingredients to make them, I like to add a few “extras” to give my twist on this game day appetizer.

Our favorite way to enjoy these mini pigs in a blanket, is with cocktail smoked sausage links (aka Lil’ Smokies), then the dough is brushed with an egg wash to ensure they get perfectly golden brown and crisp. For added pop and flavor, we sprinkle the tops with our everything bagel seasoning before baking.

While these are commonly thought of as a party appetizer, and certainly disappear quickly on game day, they’re also an easy option for lunchtime or a snack.

Mini Pigs In A Blanket Ingredients

These mini pigs in a blanket are made with just 4 ingredients plus dips for serving.
(Scroll below to the printable recipe card for details and measurements.)

  • Crescent rolls – You’ll need one tube of crescent roll dough for this recipe.
  • Cocktail smoked sausage links – Hillshire Farm Lil Smokies is the most popular brand (and the one I use) but any brand will work.
  • Egg – Beaten together with water and brushed over the crescent roll dough to achieve that crispy golden exterior once baked.
  • Everything bagel seasoning – A simple addition, but one we love for color and flavor. Use our homemade everything bagel seasoning or buy it at the store.
  • For serving – Mustard, ketchup, horseradish sauce, BBQ sauce, and/or chili sauce.

Easy Variation Ideas

Here are a handful of different ways to change up this recipe.

  • Use cut up hot dogs. Can’t find cocktail-sized sausage links? You can make these with hot dogs instead. Just cut them into 1.5″ pieces.
  • Use regular-sized hot dogs. You can also turn these into a meal by using hot dogs, similar to our mummy dogs. Just wrap the hot dog in the crescent roll – you may need 2 pieces.
  • Add cheese. You can add a sprinkle of shredded cheese on top before baking or cut a slice of cheese into smaller pieces and roll it into the crescent roll with the sausage.
  • Try different varieties of lil smokies. I love the smoked cocktail sausages but there are many other varieties, including cheese-filled and BBQ. Any of them will work for this recipe.
  • Add different seasoning. You can use butter instead of an egg wash and any seasoning of choice in place of the everything bagel seasoning. Sesame seeds will work and you could even do a garlic parmesan butter, which would be delish.
  • Make it spicy. To kick things up a notch, add a jalapeno slice in with each little smokie.

How to Make Pigs in a Blanket

This party appetizer is easy to make and requires just a few minutes of prep. Here’s a summary:
(Scroll below to the printable recipe card for details and measurements.)

  • Prepare the crescent roll dough. Unroll the dough and separate into triangles. Cut each triangle into 3.
  • Roll the sausage. Place a sausage on each triangle and roll. Place seam side down on a parchment-lined baking sheet.
  • Bake. Brush the dough with the egg wash and sprinkle with the seasoning. Bake until golden.

How to Make Air Fryer Pigs in a Blanket

If you’d prefer to make air fryer pigs in a blanket instead of baking them, prepare them as above then place in the air fryer at 325 degrees for 3 to 4 minutes. The crescents should be light brown. Turn over and cook for another 3 to 4 minutes. (All air fryers are different, so time might need to be adjusted.)

Serving Suggestions

Wondering what goes with pigs in a blanket? I recommend serving these with mustard, ketchup, horseradish sauce, BBQ sauce, and/or chili sauce – they all compliment the smokiness of the mini sausages or hot dogs.

How to Store & Reheat Leftovers

  • Assemble ahead. While I wouldn’t recommend baking these mini pigs in a blanket ahead of time, you can assemble them up to 24 hours in advance. Roll the sausage in the crescent roll and place on the baking sheet as instructed, then cover and transfer the baking sheet to the fridge.
  • How to store. While crescent roll pigs in a blanket are best enjoyed immediately, they can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 2 days.
  • How to reheat. Reheating pigs in a blanket is best done in the oven. To avoid burning, tent foil over them on a baking sheet. Reheat for 5-7 minutes, until heated through.
