This easy Turtle Pie recipe has a soft custard center, filled with crunchy nuts throughout, and drizzled with melted chocolate. It tastes like a candy bar! Delicious dessert for the holidays or anytime.
What Is Turtle Pie?
Typically, Turtle Pie recipes are no bake frozen cream pies (such as Edwards brand and Baskin Robbins) with a chocolate center, layer of caramel, and pecans on top (or a caramel center and chocolate on top.) A la Turtles Candy.
This one is a little different with a center that’s more custard-y as opposed to a mousse-like texture, includes some maple syrup, mixed nuts throughout, and then drizzled with melted chocolate. Deeelicious!
Turtle Pie Recipe
Here’s what you’ll need:
- 9-inch deep dish frozen pie shell (or a homemade pie crust)
- Granulated sugar
- Maple syrup
- Unsalted butter
- Large eggs
- Lemon juice
- Vanilla and salt
- Chopped salted, roasted mixed nuts
- Semi-sweet chocolate chips
How to Make Turtle Pie
This pie is super easy to make, especially if you buy a pre-made frozen pie shell. Here’s the rundown (scroll below for the detailed printable.)
- Combine the sugar, maple syrup, and butter; simmer until sugar dissolves, then cool to room temperature.
- Whisk together the eggs, lemon juice, vanilla, and salt. Stir in the cooled syrup mixture, then the nuts.
- Pour the nut filling into the pie shell.
- Bake until the crust is golden and the filling is set.
- Let cool on rack, then drizzle melted chocolate over the top.
It is at this time, again, I desperately wish my kids weren’t allergic to peanuts, because it is impossible to find a can of mixed-nuts that don’t include them. But it’s also at this time, I am feeling especially grateful that they can eat other nuts, so I can make this Turtle Pie recipe.
For me, the process takes longer because I have to buy individual nuts…that are all raw…then roast them. But whatever. This pie was worth it. For most people, this pie is super quick to prep. I used whole almonds and pecan halves, but any combo works here!
How to Store Chocolate Turtle Pie
This pie can sit out for a day (covered with foil.) After that, it should be refrigerated. Either way, it will dry out the longer it sits and is best eaten within a couple days. Freezing this pie is not recommended, since the filling tends to separate and get watery once thawed.

{Mixed Nut} Turtle Pie
Ingredients
- 1 9-inch deep dish frozen pie shell
- 2/3 cup granulated sugar
- 2/3 cup pure maple syrup (not pancake syrup)
- 6 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 4 large eggs
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
- 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
- 2 cups salted, roasted mixed nuts , coarsely chopped
- 2 ounces semi-sweet chocolate chips
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Place the pie shell on a baking sheet; set aside.
- Add the sugar, maple syrup, and butter to a small saucepan; bring to a simmer until the sugar dissolves. Remove from heat and set aside to cool to room temperature.
- In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, lemon juice, vanilla, and salt. Stir in the cooled syrup mixture, then the nuts.
- Pour the nut filling into the pie shell.
- Bake until the crust is golden and the filling is set, about 1 hour. (If topping or crust begins to brown too quickly, cover with a crust protector.)
- Let cool completely on rack.
- In a small microwavable-safe bowl, melt the chocolate chips in 30 second intervals, stirring in between, until smooth. Dip the tines of a fork in the melted chocolate and drizzle over the pie.
- Let stand for about ten minutes until the chocolate sets, then slice and enjoy!
Great tasting pie though the ‘custard’ was not gelled. Maybe the sugar not completely melted? Not enough corn starch? Nuts too oily (Planter’s lightly salted mixed nuts that I toasted)? It tasted so good so I’m not giving up. Any suggestions?
In the oven right now
I would imagine I would need to use pure maple syrup, not just pancake syrup, as this pie probably needs the thicker consistency that pure maple syrup would provide, correct?
Correct! Definitely use good quality pure maple syrup.
Ours came out great, it is delicious. It set up perfectly. Thanks for the great recipe I will be making this one again!
followed the directions and it came out perfect. easy and really good, thanks
Oh. My. Goodness. This pie. I need it badly. Billy isn’t a fan of pecan pie because of the “weird” texture, but I bet he’d like this as an alternative! Crossing fingers!
Oh girl, I feel your pain! I pretty much live off of peanut butter so I’m not sure what I’d do. Though I love the mixed nuts here. Thank god for bulk bins!
I loved this pie. I know it will sounds crazy but as much as I love peanut butter, I don’t actually like peanuts. This works with any type of nuts.
PIE! Turtle Pie! I love you!
We loved this! I made it with cashews, pecans, and walnuts.
My mouth just fell off my face.
