Quick and Easy Snack Recipe

We love a good, easy homemade snack, and while very few things can ever come between me and my favorite stovetop popcorn, I do like a little variety. I took our beloved mini doughnut hot buttered cheerios and put a savory spin on it. No surprise, we’re smitten with these ones too!

Made with Cheerios cereal, butter, Parmesan cheese, and a couple seasonings, this snack will disappear as fast as it comes together. Great for parties, game day, school lunches, road trips, and any occasion.

You only need 5 simple ingredients to make this savory snack.

  • Cheerios cereal – Plain Cheerios are the way to go for this recipe (see note below.)
  • Butter – Either regular salted or unsalted can be used, depending how salty you want the snack.
  • Parmesan cheese – Make sure it’s grated, not shredded. The kind from the tub is totally fine for this recipe.
  • Seasonings – Garlic powder and dried Italian seasoning provide added flavor.

How To Make Hot Buttered Cheerios

These hot buttered Cheerios can be made in the microwave, oven, or on the stove. I prefer the stovetop method – it’s super easy and provides the best results. It only takes 5 minutes.
(Scroll below to the printable recipe card for details and measurements.)

  1. Melt butter in a nonstick skillet.
  2. Stir in the Cheerios.
  3. Cook for a few minutes until well coated and toasty.
  4. Remove from the heat and toss to coat in a seasoned Parmesan mixture.
  5. Gobble them up and try not to hoard all the servings for yourself! HA.

Serving Suggestions

We enjoy these best at room temperature, but we’ve been known to sneak a handful before they’ve fully cooled! Enjoy them right from a big bowl or serve them in little portable cups. Also great for road trips in plastic baggies for little hands, just have napkins at the ready.

Itโ€™s truly a perfect quick and easy snack anytime when you’ve craving something salty and crunchy.

Proper Storage

Any leftovers will keep in a sealed container on the countertop for 2 to 3 days. Theyโ€™re safe to eat after that, but will start to lose their crunch. For longer storage, you can certainly stick them in the fridge.

Garlic-Parmesan Hot Buttered Cheerios

Prep: 5 minutes
Cook: 5 minutes
Total: 10 minutes
Servings: 8 (1/2 cup per serving)
These Hot Buttered Cheerios are a quick savory snack that require just 5 simple ingredients and 5 minutes to make. Cereal pan โ€œfriedโ€ in butter until toasty, then tossed in a seasoned Parmesan mixture. Easy, portable, and perfect for munching!

Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup finely grated parmesan cheese
  • 3/4 teaspoon dried Italian seasoning
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 cup butter, (see note below)
  • 4 cups plain Cheerios cereal, (see note below)

Instructions

  • In a small bowl, mix together the parmesan, Italian seasoning, and garlic powder; set aside.
  • In a large nonstick skillet, melt the butter over medium heat.
  • Dump in the Cheerios and stir to coat evenly in the butter. Cook for about 3-5 minutes, stirring frequently, until the cereal is lightly toasted.
  • Remove from heat and pour the parmesan mixture over Cheerios; toss well to coat evenly.
  • Allow to cool completely, serve, and enjoy!

Notes

Butter. Either regular salted or unsalted can be used, depending how salty you want the snack.
Cheerios. Plain Cheerios cereal is best for this recipe. The Honey Nut variety will work in a pinch, but it will give the mixture a sweeter taste, which is not our preference for this particular snack.
