This homemade hummus recipe is quick and easy to make, smooth and creamy, with added barbecue flavor for a delicious twist!
Hummus might look plain and boring, but what it lacks in appearance, it makes up for in taste! My favorite legume (the chickpea) comes together with a few other simple ingredients to create a wonderful, easy dip.
Ditch the store-bought stuff and make your own — it can be whipped up in minutes!
What is Hummus?
Hummus is of Middle Eastern origin. Chickpeas are blended with olive oil, tahini, lemon juice, and garlic, which is transformed into a creamy sweet and nutty dip. You can also take it up a notch and change its flavor each time by adding other spices. It’s incredibly delicious and satisfying.
Hummus Recipe
This particular hummus recipe uses canned chickpeas, which is a great pantry item (and one we use often in our favorite chickpea curry and pasta e ceci), along with traditional ingredients, but also some barbecue sauce and a splash of Tabasco, which puts a delicious spin on this easy appetizer.
What is Hummus made of?
This recipe incorporates the traditional ingredients, but also adds in a few new ones for a delicious twist. Here’s what you’ll need for this recipe:
Chickpeas – we’re using canned chickpeas, which are readily available at grocery stores. They are drained and rinsed, with some of the liquid reserved. If you’ve got the inclination to boil up your own, go for it!
Tahini – Tahini is a paste (similar to nut butter in texture and appearance) made from hulled sesame seeds. It’s a main ingredient here and also in our beloved baba ganoush recipe.
Olive oil – olive oil helps make this dip creamy and luscious.
Lemon Juice – light and bright fresh lemon juice gives balance to the other flavors.
Garlic – fresh garlic lends a unique spiciness (but not like peppers!) that is a category all by itself.
Spices – paprika and salt
Additional – we put a fun and delicious twist to this hummus with the addition of barbecue sauce and a bit of Tabasco!
How to Make Hummus
It’s so easy. You just place all the ingredients in the bowl of a food processor and blend until smooth. Removing the skins from each chickpea is a tedious task, but will get you an ultra smooth texture. Your choice on that one!
What to Eat with Hummus?
Serve with torn up Naan bread, pita chips, crackers, and/or fresh vegetables.
Storing Leftovers
How Long Does Hummus Last? Homemade hummus should not be left out at room temperature for more than 2 hours. After that, it should be stored in an airtight container in the fridge and will keep up to 1 week.

What is Tahini?????
Hi Vera – Tahini is a paste made from ground, hulled sesame seeds. It comes in a jar and you can find it at most markets in the ethnic/international aisle.
I made this today, and it came out perfectly.
I would have never thought of hummus and BBQ together but sounds like a super delicious idea.
I love that hummus can take on pretty much any flavor(s) you can imagine so easily, which is why making it homemade is way better than buying a jar of it. However, I never would have thought to add BBQ flavors to it! The hubby would absolutely love this!
I was just saying how I need to make my own hummus…sounds like a perfect place to start!
made this last night. added a bit more lemon juice, but other than that made it as directed. it was yummy last night but even better today!
Oh, I bet…all the flavors got to meld overnight! Thanks Candace! So glad it worked out for you :D
This sounds awesome, I LOVE hummus!
Hmm so I see we’ll be doing the EXACT same thing on Superbowl Sunday. I’m actually incapable of watching football. I can stare at the screen…but it’s really just staring. THere’s nothing going on there, and I’m probably thinking about chocolate.
At least this year I can also mindless dip some carrots into this hummus! Love the bbq flair!
Love hummus! And this sounds like a tasty spin on it!
…and Jay was just asking me, “Is Amy having a Superbowl party this year?” So, um, (clears throat) are you gonna make this for Superbowl? :o)
Yes! Are you and Jay coming? Plan on it :D
I dig that no animals were harmed in the making of this!
Yummy.
This sounds yummy, Amy! I love hummus. My current favorite is lemon, which would go very nicely with this barbecue version!
Kristy – lemon…yep. Sometimes I add pizza sauce or sour cream/scallions. The possibilities are endless.
WHOA. I want this in a major way.
