Easy Banana Pudding Shots Recipe

If you’re a fan of jello shots, but not familiar with pudding shots, you need to try them! These Banana Split Pudding Shots are so fun and delicious. The texture is close to a mousse, very light and creamy. That alone is super tasty but adding your favorite sundae toppings (whipped cream, a maraschino cherry, sprinkles, chocolate syrup) takes it to a whole ‘nother level.

But be warned – these are definitely boozy pudding shots and one thing they don’t skimp on is the liquor! So be sure to treat them like an adult beverage, not just dessert.

Ingredients Needed

Just 4 ingredients go into this easy pudding shots recipe.
(Scroll below to the printable recipe card for details and measurements.)

  • Vanilla pudding mix – It MUST be instant pudding.
  • Whole milk – 2% could be used but whole milk is recommended and gives the creamiest texture.
  • Banana liqueur – 99 Bananas or similar. It’s best when chilled.
  • Cool Whip – You can also make your own whipped cream, if preferred.
  • Toppings – Chocolate syrup, rainbow sprinkles, maraschino cherries, or other banana split toppings as desired.

Can I Make These Less Boozy?

As sweet and creamy as these pudding shots may be, they are a true shot and very strong alcohol-wise. If you don’t want them as strong, I’d say go with half of the banana liqueur and add the same amount of milk in its place. If you are looking for a fun dessert with just a touch of alcohol, only use 1/4th of the liqueur and the rest milk.

How to Make Banana Pudding Shots

I find pudding shots even easier to make than jello shot recipes, because there’s no boiling of water and the chill time is much less. Here’s a brief summary.
(Scroll below to the printable recipe card for details and measurements.)

  1. Make the pudding mixture. Whisk the pudding mix, milk, and banana liqueur together for 2 minutes. Add in the whipped topping. Whisk until smooth then refrigerate for 5 minutes.
  2. Transfer to cups. Add 3 tablespoons of the mixture to each condiment cup you’re using. Place the lids on and return to the fridge for at least one hour.
  3. Serve. Before serving, top with additional whipped cream, chocolate syrup, sprinkles, and a maraschino cherry.

Tips & Variations

Here are a few tips for the best pudding shots, including what to do if you don’t have banana liqueur on hand.

  • What if I don’t have banana liqueur? If you don’t have or can’t find banana liqueur you can use banana cream pudding mix in place of the vanilla and in place of the liqueur you can use your favorite rum or vodka.
  • Make sure the pudding mix is instant. This recipe will not work with pudding mix that needs to be cooked.
  • Make homemade whipped cream. You can use fresh homemade whipped cream in place of the whipped topping, if preferred. You will need 2 cups of heavy whipping cream and 1/4 cup of powdered sugar. Place these two items in a large bowl and beat until stiff peaks form. Use half of the whipped cream in the mix and the other half for the topping.
  • Wait to add the toppings. I would only add the toppings until right before you are ready to serve. If you expect to have leftovers, add the toppings only to the pudding shots that will be enjoyed right away.

Proper Storage

  • How long do pudding shots last? These banana pudding shots will last in the fridge for up to 5 days, as long as they are kept covered. I do recommend storing them without any toppings, as the whipped cream won’t hold its form (especially homemade) and the other ingredients can seep into the pudding mixture.
  • Can you freeze pudding shots? Yes, you can actually freeze these pudding shots for up to 3 months. That way you can make a whole bunch and keep them in the freezer for whenever the perfect occasion arises.
