Banana Split Dessert Kabobs
It’s hard to beat an old-fashioned banana split when it comes to making ice cream sundaes. This classic dessert is typically made with three types of ice cream, a banana, maraschino cherries, three different types of topping and garnished with nuts. A childhood favorite loved by not only kids, but adults too.
Traditionally, banana splits are served in a banana boat bowl, but these banana split kabobs we’re sharing today are enjoyed on a skewer! They’ve got all the delicious fruit flavors and punch of chocolate, converted into a dessert kabob. The ice cream is replaced with whipped cream for dipping. Food on a stick is always so much fun to eat!
Ingredients Needed
Here’s what you’ll need to make these dessert kabobs:
(Scroll below to the printable recipe card for details and measurements.)
- Strawberries – Fresh small strawberries are a must for these kabobs.
- Pineapple – Fresh, ripe pineapple.
- Bananas – They should be ripe, but not overly. Avoid bananas that have brown spots. If they’re too ripe, they won’t be sturdy enough on the stick.
- Brownie – Use your favorite homemade brownie recipe or store-bought.
- Chocolate candy melts – Melted and drizzled over the kabobs.
- Finely chopped peanuts – This is an optional garnish. If nut allergies are a concern, just omit.
- Whipped cream – We enjoy homemade whipped cream as a dipping option, in lieu of ice cream, which is pretty hard to eat on a stick. HA.
How to Make Banana Split Kabobs
These dessert kabobs couldn’t be easier to make. Here’s a summary:
(Scroll below to the printable recipe card for details and measurements.)
- Prepare the fruit. Wash and dry the strawberries, then slice off the tops. Cut the pineapple and banana into slices approximately the same size as the strawberries.
- Assemble the kabobs. Assemble each skewer, alternating the fruit and brownie pieces as you go. Place skewers on a parchment-lined baking sheet.
- Garnish. Melt candy melts according to package directions and drizzle over the kabobs. Sprinkle with chopped nuts.
- Chill and serve. Place in the fridge until ready to serve. Serve with a little bowl of whipped cream on the side for dipping.
Tips for Success
There’s nothing complicated about this banana split dessert, but there are a few things to keep in mind so the kabobs are delicious and easy to eat.
- Use fresh fruit. The strawberries, pineapple, and banana should all be fresh. Avoid frozen for these kabobs.
- Cut the pieces the same size. Try to purchase small strawberries, then cut the pineapple and banana the same size so it’s all uniform. If the strawberries are huge, cut them in half.
- Candy melts. I use candy melts instead of chocolate chips, because they dry quickly and don’t immediately melt if you’re outside in the sun.
- Try a different nut. The peanuts can easily be replaced with pecans, walnuts, macadamia nuts, etc. Or simply omit if there are nut allergies.
- Make mini kabobs. We used standard wooden skewers to fit a few pieces of everything on there, but you can use cocktail party skewers or lollipop sticks and make mini banana split kabobs, if preferred.

Make Ahead and Storage
These can be made up to 1 day in advance of needing to serve them. Keep them in a single layer, covered with plastic wrap, and store in the fridge. If you need to stack them to save on space, that’s fine, but make sure the chocolate is completely set first.
