How many times have I mentioned that I don’t really love bananas? Probably a lot. But I buy them all the time, and force myself to eat them, because they’re a fruit, and good for me, and easy, and come prepackaged, and portable…blah blah. But, again, don’t love them. (Clearly I have no future as a Chiquita representative. HA!)
But I’ve realized I just don’t love them on their own. In something, though, is a whole different story. (Similar to how I feel about oranges.) Offer me a slice of banana bread, banana pie, banana pudding, a banana ice cream sundae, and I might just bite your hand off.
So it comes as no surprise that I really love this banana smoothie. It’s sweet and tangy, with a hint of coffee and honey – good energy boost in the morning to start your day.
Banana Smoothie Recipe
Ingredients you need for this banana smoothie:
(Scroll below to the printable recipe card for details and measurements.)
- Milk: We use whole milk, but low fat, skim, or even almond milk can be used instead, keeping in mind the consistency will be thinner.
- Vanilla Greek yogurt: This adds tanginess and contributes to the creaminess. Greek yogurt is preferred over regular yogurt and vanilla over plain, for flavor.
- Honey: For natural sweetness that balances out the tang from the yogurt.
- Finely ground instant coffee granules: This smoothie calls for instant coffee grounds. You want instant, not regular, so the granules will dissolve. Another option is to use some brewed (and cooled) coffee to taste.
- Large bananas, sliced and frozen: Buy ripe bananas for natural sweetness.
- Ice cubes: Ice makes it thicker, more frothy, and colder. Either crushed or cubed, depending how powerful your blender is.
This ingredient combination might sound weird, but trust me, the flavors work!
How to Make a Banana Smoothie
As with most smoothies, you place all the ingredients in a blender, put the lid on, and blend until smooth and your desired consistency is reached. We recommend putting the liquids in first and the ice last. Pour into tall glasses and enjoy with a straw. To make this banana smoothie recipe, follow the steps below included in the printable recipe card.
How to Freeze Bananas for Smoothies
You can use ripe bananas that aren’t frozen, but frozen banana slices make the smoothie thicker and creamier. To freeze bananas, slice and put on a parchment paper lined cookie sheet, stick in the freezer for 45 minutes, then transfer to a freezer safe plastic Ziploc bag and place in the freezer until ready to use.

Sounds so yummy. I can’t wait to try it. Can you recommend how much cooled brewed coffee I would use to get the same flavor as the instant coffee?
Surprisingly Good! The coffee gives the smoothie a chocolate vibe. A keeper for sure.
How much brewed coffee would you use in place of the instant? Sounds amazing!
I was wondering if I can do this in a blendjet type blender???
I don’t like yogurt. Can you taste it in the smoothie?
This recipe is such a gift. I’m SO not a banana person either but I want to be because they are so good for runners to eat! We loved this. Tasted awesome.
Oh, this smoothie sounds very good indeed. Can’t wait to try it!
Smoothies are our dessert lately. So good in the warm weather but low-cal, so YAY. We both loved this one, thank you!
I am a banana hater except in smoothies, it is the one thing that makes them creamy and hides all the greens I put in them. I added spinach. Delicious.
