What is Whipped Butter?

Whipped butter is exactly what it sounds like – butter that has been whipped to become light and fluffy. You can actually buy whipped butter in the stores – manufacturers are offering it as a “lighter” butter option – but I prefer to make mine. While you can simply whip regular ol’ butter and leave it plain, it’s even better when you doctor it up with add-ins and flavor.

In this easy maple whipped butter, we turn regular salted butter into sweet, creamy, and fluffy maple flavored butter. It’s rich, sweet, and pairs so well with fall baked goods like pumpkin biscuits and pumpkin pancakes.

This maple whipped butter is great for gift-giving too! You can easily transfer it to a cute little jar with a ribbon or bow, add a nice note, and you have the perfect edible gift for friends, family, neighbors, and co-workers. Homemade edible gifts are wonderful when you’re not quite sure what to give or just want to make someone’s day a little sweeter.

Maple Butter Ingredients

All you need is 4 ingredients to make this maple whipped butter:
(Scroll below to the printable recipe card for details and measurements.)

  • Butter: I used salted butter. If you use unsalted butter, you’ll need to add a pinch of salt to the recipe.
  • Powdered sugar: Makes the butter extra sweet and creamy. Do not use granulated sugar.
  • Maple syrup: For that fall maple flavor. Use pure maple syrup for best results.
  • Pumpkin pie spice: A bit of warm flavor to balance out the sweetness.

How to Make Whipped Butter

If you’ve ever wondered how to make whipped butter, I’m happy to tell you it’s extremely easy.
(Don’t miss the printable recipe card below for all the details.)

  • Beat butter. Beat butter until light and fluffy.
  • Add remaining ingredients. Add in the rest of the ingredients and beat until combined. Continue whipping until soft and creamy, being sure to scrape down the sides of the bowl.
  • Transfer to serving container. Spoon into a ramekin or glass jars. Use as desired.

Tips for Success

If this is your first time making whipped butter, here are a few things to keep in mind.

  • Salted vs unsalted butter. Both salted and unsalted butter can be used. I wrote this recipe for salted butter but I’ve used both. If you use unsalted butter, add in 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt a little at a time as salt is a must for bringing out the best flavor.
  • Use powdered sugar not granulated: Make sure to use powdered sugar. Granulated sugar will make the butter taste and feel grainy, not smooth and creamy.
  • Reduce the sweetness. This flavored butter is sweet. If you want it a little less sweet, reduce the powdered sugar. Just keep in mind that you may also need to reduce the amount of maple syrup as well.
  • Use softened butter. Before whipping, soften the butter to room temperature. It shouldn’t be cold and hard as a rock but not melted either. Room temperature butter whips up super nice and creamy!

How to Store

  • At room temperature. You can keep your whipped butter at room temperature for up to 2 days, as long as it’s covered and out of direct sunlight.
  • In the fridge. It will also last for up to 10 days in the fridge. Just bring to room temperature before serving.
  • In the freeze. Or you can even freeze it for up to 2 months! Just make sure it’s in a freezer-safe container. Thaw in the fridge and bring to room temperature before serving.

Serving Suggestions

You can use whipped butter on anything you would use regular butter on, when you want to give a sweet maple flavor. A few of my favorite ways to enjoy this maple whipped butter include:

Whipped butter also makes a great gift, so sometimes I’ll just put it in a cute little jar with a ribbon and gift to my friends and family – though I always save at least one jar for the house!
