Easy Slow Cooker Cube Steak

This slow cooker beef cube steak recipe is one of those low effort dinners that I love so much. The only hands-on portion of this recipe is browning the beef which, truly, you could skip if you were really short on time. (Though it does add so much flavor.)

You could easily toss everything in the slow cooker before you head to work and come home to dinner ready to go. Add a simple side, like mashed potatoes and a veggie, and dinner is served!

Helpful Tips & Variations

  • Gravy mix. Use homemade gravy, another flavor of gravy mix like onion or mushroom, or a combination of beef broth and cornstarch (or flour), if desired.
  • Use a different soup. Cream of celery soup can be used instead of cream of mushroom, if preferred. You can also utilize a homemade white sauce or a mix of mushroom broth and heavy cream thickened with flour or cornstarch.
  • Add in vegetables. You can add vegetables like carrots, potatoes, or mushrooms directly to the crockpot. They’ll cook alongside the steak and absorb the flavorful gravy.
  • You can double the recipe, as long as your crockpot is large enough to accommodate the increased volume without overcrowding. Adjust cooking times as necessary.

Step-by-step photos can be seen below the recipe card

Ingredients

  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 4 beef cube steaks, (fully thawed if frozen), beef chuck or round steak also work
  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 packets gravy mix, (beef flavor)
  • 1 can cream of mushroom soup, (10.5 oz.)
  • 1 can water, (10.5 oz.)
  • salt and pepper, to taste
  • fresh parsley, chopped, for garnish

Instructions

  • Warm olive oil in a nonstick skillet over medium heat. Swirl to coat, then brown the cube steaks on both sides to add flavor and texture. Transfer browned steaks to a 6 quart crockpot.
  • Place the thinly sliced onion on top of the steaks.
  • In a mixing bowl, add the beef gravy packets and cream of mushroom soup. Fill the empty soup can to the top with water and add that in along with some salt and pepper, to taste. Stir until well combined, then pour the gravy mixture over the steaks and onions, ensuring the steaks are fully covered.
  • Cover with the lid and cook on LOW for 6 hours, or until the steaks are tender and the flavors blend together.
  • Once cooked, carefully remove the steaks from the crockpot. (If the gravy needs thickening, you can mix a tablespoon of cornstarch with a tablespoon of cold water to make a slurry, then stir it into the crockpot. Cook on high with the lid off for a few minutes or until the gravy thickens.)
  • Serve the cube steaks hot, garnished with chopped fresh parsley. Enjoy over mashed potatoes and corn.

Cook: Cook on low for 6 hours, until the steaks are tender. Serve hot with mashed potatoes and corn. Enjoy!

How to Store

Store any leftover crockpot cube steak in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.

You can microwave leftovers for 1-2 minutes until hot. Or heat in a 350°F oven, cover with foil and bake for 10-15 minutes.

Cool the dish completely, then transfer it to a freezer-safe container or a heavy-duty freezer bag. Freeze for up to 3 months. To reheat, thaw in the refrigerator overnight and then reheat using one of the methods mentioned above until it reaches 165°F. Note that freezing can affect the texture of the gravy, but gently reheating should help maintain its flavor and consistency.
