Easy Slow Cooker Cube Steak

This slow cooker beef cube steak recipe is one of those low effort dinners that I love so much. The only hands-on portion of this recipe is browning the beef which, truly, you could skip if you were really short on time. (Though it does add so much flavor.)

You could easily toss everything in the slow cooker on your way to work and come home to dinner ready to go. Add a simple side, like mashed potatoes and a veggie, and dinner is served!

Why You’ll Love This Crockpot Cube Steak Recipe

  • Only 4 main ingredients. The primary ingredients in this recipe are cube steaks, onion, gravy, and cream of mushroom soup. Beyond that, you just need oil, salt, and pepper. So easy.
  • Set it and forget it. This recipe is a true “set it and forget it” dinner. After you sear the steaks and pop everything in the crockpot, you don’t have to think about this dish until it’s ready.
  • Cozy comfort food. Cube steak with gravy is definitely a “meat on the bones” Sunday dinner type of dish. I love pairing it with mashed potatoes and corn for a hearty, comforting dinner.

What You’ll Need

This crockpot cube steak recipe is made with just a few main ingredients.
(Scroll below to the printable recipe card for details and measurements.)

  • Olive oil – To brown the steaks.
  • Beef cube steaks – Substitute the cube steak with thinly sliced beef chuck or round steak if cube steaks are not available. These cuts will also tenderize nicely in the slow cooker.
  • Onion – Adds flavor and texture to the dish.
  • Gravy mix – Use homemade gravy, another flavor of gravy mix like onion or mushroom, or a combination of beef broth and cornstarch (or flour) to chicken, if desired.
  • Cream of mushroom soup – Cream of celery soup can be used instead of cream of mushroom, if preferred. You can also utilize a homemade white sauce or a mix of mushroom broth and heavy cream thickened with flour or cornstarch.
  • Water
  • Salt & pepper – To taste.
  • Fresh parsley – For garnish.

How To Make Slow Cooker Beef Cube Steak

Here’s a quick overview of how to make slow cooker cube steak.
(Scroll down to the recipe card below for more detailed instructions and donโ€™t miss the video below.)

  1. Brown the beef. Brown the cube steaks in the olive oil. Transfer to the crockpot.
  2. Combine the ingredients. Place the onions on top of the steaks. Combine the beef gravy packets, soup, and water in a bowl with the salt and pepper. Pour over the steaks, making sure to cover them fully.
  3. Cook. Cook on low for 6 hours, until the steaks are tender. Serve hot with mashed potatoes and corn. Enjoy!

Tips For Success

Here are a few helpful hints for making the best crockpot cube steak.

  • Make sure the beef is thawed. It’s best to thaw the cube steak before adding it to the crock pot to ensure even cooking and optimal texture.
  • Thicken the gravy if needed. Mix a tablespoon of cornstarch with a tablespoon of cold water to make a slurry, then stir it into the crockpot. Cook on high for an additional 15-20 minutes or until the gravy thickens.
  • You can add vegetables like carrots, potatoes, or mushrooms directly to the crockpot. They’ll cook alongside the steak and absorb the flavorful gravy.
  • Do I have to brown the steaks? Browning the steaks prior to adding them to the crockpot isn’t entirely necessary, but it adds depth of flavor and improves the texture of the meat.
  • You can double the recipe, as long as your crockpot is large enough to accommodate the increased volume without overcrowding. Adjust cooking times as necessary.

What To Serve With Cube Steak

You can serve this cube steak with any variety of sides. It’s perfect over mashed potatoes or with creamed corn but also pairs great with roasted green beans, our favorite rice pilaf, a garden salad, or dinner rolls to mop up that luscious gravy!

Proper Storage

  • Fridge. Store any leftover crock pot cube steak in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
  • Reheat: You can microwave leftovers for 1-2 minutes until hot. Or heat in a 350ยฐF oven, cover with foil and bake for 10-15 minutes.
  • Freeze: Cool the dish completely, then transfer it to a freezer-safe container or a heavy-duty freezer bag. Freeze for up to 3 months. To reheat, thaw in the refrigerator overnight and then reheat using one of the methods mentioned above until it reaches 165ยฐF. Note that freezing can affect the texture of the gravy, but gently reheating should help maintain its flavor and consistency.
