This irresistible Chopped Italian Sandwich includes lettuce, onion, deli meats, and provolone that are tossed with a tangy-creamy dressing then piled high on a hoagie bun. It’s a simple and easy to make lunch or dinner bursting with flavor that you’ll want to make every week!
Easy Chopped Italian Sandwich Recipe
Every single week it’s a tough decision – do I make my Bird Dog Sandwich or this Italian chopped sandwich – we LOVE them both so much. I don’t think anyone in the family could definitively say which one is their favorite, since they’re both so different and equally fantastic.
This chopped Italian sandwich is reminiscent of my Italian Grinder Sandwich made with all the classic Italian salad ingredients, like salami, ham, and provolone, and a simple tangy, mayo-based dressing. The hearty toasted hoagie roll works perfectly to hold it all together. Make it once and you’ll be daydreaming about it until you can make it the next time.
Why You’ll Love This Sandwich
- Easy & filling lunch. This chopped Italian salad sandwich is super filling, which makes it great for lunch or even dinner. Just add some chips on the side and dinner is served.
- Tangy Italian sandwich flavors. You’ll find all the flavors of a classic Italian sandwich in this chopped salad sandwich, right down to the irresistible dressing.
- Irresistible dressing. The dressing is one of the best parts! It really takes the sandwich to level 10 – and it’s easy to make. All you need is mayo, vinegar, oil, honey, and a couple seasonings. So simple yet so good!
Ingredients Needed
This Italian chopped sandwich is made with many of the same ingredients you’d use for any other Italian salad or sandwich.

- Mayonnaise – The base of the dressing. Do not substitute with Miracle Whip.
- Olive oil – Adds to the creaminess of the dressing.
- Red wine vinegar – Adds a tangy flavor to the dressing.
- Honey – Sweetens the dressing and balances out the tangy vinegar.
- Spices – Oregano & black pepper season the dressing.
- Romaine lettuce – Finely chopped into smaller pieces.
- Meat – A combination of sliced ham and salami. Buy it in the packets or fresh from the deli counter, then chop it up.
- Provolone cheese – This sliced cheese is mild and pairs perfectly with the ham and salami. Chop it up like the deli meats.
- Veggies – Roma tomatoes (seeds removed), red onion, and mild banana peppers, all chopped small.
- Hoagie rolls – Be sure to grab fresh rolls that won’t tear when you pile them up with the salad.
How To Make an Italian Chopped Salad Sandwich
This recipe is seriously so easy to make. 15 minutes and lunch is ready!

- Make the dressing. Combine the mayo, oil, vinegar, honey, and seasonings until smooth.
- Combine. Add in the lettuce and other ingredients, gently folding everything until well coated in the dressing.
- Assemble. Split the hoagie rolls open, scooping out a bit of the inside, and then lightly toast the rolls. Fill with the chopped salad and enjoy.
Tips & Variations
- Don’t scoop too much of the bread. You want to scoop out a bit of the sides of the rolls so there’s room for all of the Italian chopped salad but be sure to leave the sides and bottom intact. If you scoop too much, the bread will fall apart with the ingredients and dressing.
- Customize the salad. Feel free to use your favorite meats and veggies in the salad. Turkey, pepperoni, and other types of cheese can easily be added or substituted. Olives and jarred sweet peppers are other popular Italian salad additions.
- Use other dressing. In a pinch, you could make this with mayo and your favorite bottled Italian dressing. Personally, I think using oil, vinegar, honey, and seasonings creates a much better flavor but the idea is the same.
Serving Suggestions
This chopped Italian sandwich is a pretty filling lunch or dinner all on its own. Sometimes I’ll add some plain chips as a side, like you’d enjoy in a deli setting. If you’re trying to reduce your carb intake, you certainly can ditch the bread and just enjoy the salad. It’s amazing on its own, too.
Can This Be Prepared in Advance?
You should definitely enjoy your chopped Italian sandwich as soon as it’s prepared, to prevent the bread from getting too soggy. If needed, you could prepare the Italian chopped salad portion a few hours or up to a day in advance and keep it in an airtight container in the fridge. I would not prepare it further in advance than that, as the lettuce will become mushy.
