Letโ€™s talk creamy dressing today. I have two favorites – my Honey Sesame Dressing, which is so awesome on greens, chicken, fish, and french fries << OH YA. And this Poppy Seed Dressing. Both have that sweet and tangy flavor combo that I adore.

There are about a gazillion recipes floating around for Poppy Seed Dressing, but I like my version the best. Itโ€™s so easy to make, thereโ€™s really no reason to buy it.

Poppy Seed Dressing Recipe

Ingredients you’ll need:
*Scroll below for the complete printable recipe card.

  • Mayonnaise
  • Half n half (if you can’t find this, it’s simply equal parts heavy cream and whole milk)
  • Apple cider vinegar
  • Granulated sugar (this balances out the sharp acidity from the vinegar. Don’t skip it.)
  • Poppy seeds
  • Dry mustard powder
  • Salt

How to Make Poppy Seed Dressing:

Making this dressing is as easy as you’d imagine. You just whisk all the ingredients together until thoroughly combined and smooth.

Recipe Variations

  • Milk may be substituted for the half n half, but it wonโ€™t be as creamy.
  • You can use plain Greek yogurt in place of the mayonnaise, but it will change the flavor profile – more tangy, less sweet.
  • White wine vinegar can be substituted for the apple cider vinegar.

How To Store Poppyseed Dressing

This dressing will keep refrigerated for up to a week in a tightly fitted container. I like to store it in a mason jar with a lid, that way I can easily shake it up again before serving.

What to Use Poppy Seed Dressing For

You mean besides pouring it directly into you mouth? HA. It is wonderful on this Strawberry Spinach Salad and would also be great for coleslaw and just drizzled on fresh fruit!

My new favorite dressing. Fantastic flavors. I’ve tweaked it a bit occasionally due to me running out of an ingredient but it’s perfect as it is written. Thanks Amy!

Can you substitute honey for the sugar? Thank you

    1. Laurie says:

I have used honey and agave syrup, it works fine although it ends up being a little runnier but not a big deal! The flavor is amazing either way!

I made this recipe last week. There are only 2 people living in this house and we ate it all! I made another batch today. This is so good and can be used with spinach salad that includes apples, onions and walnuts. Fabulous. We use it on every salad we make and enjoy it daily. Thank you so much. Any chance you have a good ranch dressing in the works?

Vinaigrette is tough….but what always gets me are focaccia and frittata. (<–those are probably not spelled right). Who knows where the double c's and double t's go?!

Hi Amy, lovely dressing, but not being American I’m not too sure what half n half is? I see you can substitute milk, so is it a product of half milk half cream? Can’t wait for the salad recipe!!

    1. Amy @Belly Full says:

Half-and-half is a simple blend of equal parts whole milk and light cream, so you could just do 2 tablespoons of each. Or you can just use whole milk, but as mentioned, it will be a little thinner. Enjoy!
