Mocha Frappuccino Recipe {Starbucks Copycat}

Iced coffee is really common today, thanks to all the coffee houses. But when I was growing up, my Dad used to make it and I thought it was the strangest thing. Who drinks coffee….cold? Well, he did.

I’m not a coffee drinker, but I absolutely love the smell, and definitely love how it tastes in ice cream, baked goods, and a cold Mocha Frappuccino. I mean, of course. A Frappuccino is made with chocolate sauce, half-n-half, and sugar. What’s not to love?

My daughter is at that age where going to Starbucks is all the rage, so I take her frequently to get some syrupy concoction. But it gets expensive, so half the time I’ll make this cheater Mocha Frappuccino at home. It’s probably not as cool as going to the actual coffeeshop, but she and her friends are still impressed. HA.

What is a Frappuccino?

‘Frappuccino’ is a combination of two words – frappe (pronounced ‘frap’) and cappuccino. It’s a drink made by combining a milkshake with coffee, and was developed by The Coffee Connection, a Massachusetts based coffee shop.

In 1994, Starbucks bought The Coffee Connection, along with the rights to make, sell, and market the drink as Starbucks Frappuccino. They altered the recipe slightly, which now consists of coffee or a cream base, blended with ice and other various ingredients, usually topped with whipped cream and flavored syrups.

Ingredients Needed

You only need a few simple ingredients to recreate the classic Starbucks Frappuccino at home.
(Scroll below to the printable recipe card for details and measurements.)

  • Cold brewed coffee – Use whatever your favorite coffee is!
  • Half-n-half – This is located near the milk and heavy cream at the grocery store. If you can’t find it, it’s simply equal parts whole milk and cream.
  • Chocolate sauce – Use our chocolate sauce recipe or buy it. Chocolate syrup can be used, as well but will be thinner.
  • Sweetened condensed milk – Makes the drink sweet and creamy.
  • Whipped cream –  For serving
  • Shaved chocolate – For serving

How To Make Mocha Frappuccino

This Starbucks Frappuccino copycat is so easy to make!
(Scroll below to the printable recipe card for details and measurements.)

  1. Divide half-n-half in 8 ice cube tray slots (2 tablespoons each), and freeze overnight.
  2. Place cooled brewed coffee in the refrigerator overnight.
  3. Place 1 cup coffee, half-n-half ice cubes, chocolate sauce (or syrup), and sweetened condensed milk in a blender. Blend until smooth and frothy.
  4. Pour into a tall glass, top with whipped cream and shaved chocolate. Drink immediately and enjoy!

Recipe Variations

  • Add some caramel. Replace some of the chocolate sauce with caramel sauce, or use both!
  • Try it with coffee ice cream. Put a few dollops of coffee ice cream in the glass before you pour the liquid in.
  • Make it lighter. Make a skinny version using milk instead of half-n-half.

  4. Candis says:

hello,I’m attempting 2 make this now, but I don’t have any half&half at the moment,if substituting with milk, do I still follow same instructions given using half&half??? If using milk can something be added to mimic half&half to have same taste??? Last question, in cups how many servings does it make (if any) how store leftovers??? Thank u 4 your time ? your recipes are delightfully yummy!!

    1. Amy @Belly Full says:

Hi Candis! Half n Half is simply equal parts whole milk and heavy cream, so you can easily make it. This recipe makes 2 cups (1 a large drink, or 2 small ones.) Not sure about leftovers – we always drink it right away!

  5. La Rella says:

Can I make this without the Sweetned condensed milk ? I don’t want all the fat and calories from that .

    1. Amy @Belly Full says:

Sure! But it won’t taste the way it was intended, or quite as good IMHO.

  7. Stephanie says:

I loooove iced coffee. My mom made it when I was a kid too, and I think that’s why I’m so fond of it today. I don’t often do sweet coffee drinks, but this one sounds SO delicious. I love the idea of using half and half instead of just plain milk

  8. Joanne says:

I definitely get in iced coffee moods where I need to be physically restrained from going to a certain national chain and spending all my money there…pretty sure being able to make these frappes at home will be just as dangerous. But way more delicious.
