Chocolate Challah French Toast

If you HAD to choose, would you pick pancakes, waffles, or french toast? For me: eggs benedict. Oh waitโ€ฆ lol.

But seriously. I would pick french toast. Thick slices of bread soaked in a sweet egg custard, then pan fried in butter until golden. PALEASE. Take it up another notch made with chocolate bread and I’ll come sprinting! Chocolate, you guys. Itโ€™s the key to everything in life.

Whenever I bake challah or chocolate challah, I always set a loaf aside to make this french toast. My family begs for it!

Tips for Success and Variations

  • Challah is ideal. I love making this french toast with my chocolate challah bread for the ultimate breakfast (or dessert!), but you can make it with traditional challah, either homemade challah or store-bought. Another option is to use a loaf of Brioche.
  • Use day old bread. It’s best to use day old bread that has dried out a bit. Warm or fresh bread will just turn to mush sitting in the custard.
  • The thickness of the slices matter. It’s also important to slice bread 3/4 to 1-inch thick for the same reason mentioned above.
  • Add some orange zest. Add a teaspoon of orange zest to the custard for a different flavor. Chocolate and orange love one another.

Serving Suggestions

This french toast recipe is sweet, but we still love it with a little maple syrup or powdered sugar. For a complete breakfast, it’s nice served with a fresh fruit salad or banana smoothie.

French toast just got elevated by using chocolate challah bread. This Chocolate Challah French Toast is great for breakfast, brunch, or even dessert!

Ingredients

  • 1 loaf chocolate challah, (12 slices) – day old
  • 5 large eggs
  • 1/3 cup whole milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
  • 5 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • maple syrup, powdered sugar, and/or fresh fruit, , for serving

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 250 degrees F.
  • In a medium bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, vanilla, sugar, and cinnamon. Transfer to a shallow casserole dish or pie plate.
  • Slice the challah loaf into 3/4-inch thick slices. Soak as many slices you can fit in the custard as possible for about 4 minutes, flipping once. (Repeat with the remaining bread slices while the first batch is frying.)
  • Heat 2 tablespoons butter in a very large sautรฉ pan over medium heat until bubbly. Remove the bread slices from custard, letting excess liquid drip off, and place in the pan. Cook for 2 to 3 minutes on each side, until nicely browned.
  • Place the cooked French toast on a sheet pan and keep it warm in the oven.
  • Fry the remaining soaked bread slices, adding butter as needed, until it's all cooked.
  • Serve with warmed syrup, a dusting of powdered sugar, and fresh fruit.
