Air Fryer Banana Lumpia Recipe

Have you ever been to PF Chang’s restaurant? If you have, then you’re probably very familiar with their banana spring rolls (also known as Banana Lumpia and Turon.) Now you can save your money and easily make this fantastic dessert at home.

Sweet bananas rolled in egg roll wrappers and deep fried so they’re warm and crispy, then served with caramel sauce and ice cream. So so good! With this recipe, I altered it so they’re easier and a bit healthier, making them in my air fryer instead of deep frying.

What You’ll Need

You only need bananas, egg roll wrappers, sugar, and cinnamon to make Banana Lumpia.
(Scroll down to the recipe card below for details and measurements.)

  • Bananas – Banana Lumpia is traditionally made with cooking bananas (also known as plantains), but if you can’t find them, or if preferred, regular bananas are just fine for this recipe. Just make sure they’re very ripe, yellow and a bit spotted. If possible, choose bananas that are straighter so they’re easier to roll. See note below.
  • Granulated Sugar, Brown Sugar, and Cinnamon – The bananas are coated in a mixture of cinnamon-sugar before they get rolled up in a wrap. Sugar and cinnamon together are truly one of the best flavor combinations, especially for bananas.
  • Egg Roll Wrappers – Egg roll wrappers are used for these. Not to be confused with summer spring roll wrappers that are made of rice flour and used for Vietnamese spring rolls. Those types of wrappers are blanched in water before using them, and not meant for frying or baking.
  • Water – This acts as a glue to seal the wrappers, so the rolls don’t come undone while cooking.
  • Caramel Sauce – for dipping! Try my homemade caramel sauce, it’s so easy and amazing!
step by step how to make Air Fryer Banana Spring Rolls

How to Make Banana Spring Rolls

Making banana spring rolls in the air fryer is so easy in just a few simple steps.
(Scroll down to the recipe card below for details and measurements.)

  1. Peel and cut the bananas. Cut the banana into 3-inch sections.
  2. Roll the bananas in the cinnamon-sugar mixture. In a small bowl mix together both sugars and cinnamon. One at a time, roll the bananas in the cinnamon-sugar until fully coated.
  3. Wrap a banana in the spring roll wrapper. Lay a wrapper on a clean work surface; place one banana piece at the lower corner. Roll the corner of the wrapper around the banana. Flatten the wrapper against the sides of the cut banana. Roll again, forming a little package with one corner sticking out towards the top.
  4. Secure edges with water to seal. Dip the tip of your finger into the water and spread a little bit over the top corner of the wrapper. Continue rolling until you form a secure package, making sure the banana is fully enclosed.
  5. Preheat your air fryer. Set your air fryer to 400°F for 5 minutes.
  6. Air fry the banana spring rolls. Spray the air fryer basket. Place as many spring rolls into the basket as you can fit without touching and spray the tops with nonstick cooking spray. Air fry for 5 minutes, flip over and air fry for another 1 to 2 minutes until golden brown and crispy.
  7. Cool and enjoy. Let cool for a couple minutes, then serve with caramel sauce and ice cream!

Tips and Variations

  • Bananas vs. Plantains. You can use plantains or regular bananas for this recipe. Just make sure they’re ripe. Normally I like bananas that don’t have a single spec of brown, but for these spring rolls, riper bananas provide the best flavor.
  • Add a slice of jackfruit. Make it closer to authentic Turon (banana lumpia) by adding in a little slice of jackfruit.
  • Love chocolate? Stuff a couple mini chocolate chips in the wrapper along with the banana.
  • Don’t have an air fryer? You can bake the spring rolls instead on a non-stick baking sheet sprayed with a little oil, at 350 degrees F for about 15 minutes. Make sure to brush the wrappers with vegetable oil first so they will be crunchy and to prevent sticking.

Serving Suggestions

Banana Lumpia is best served right away while the wrapper is nice and crisp. They’re great with just a sprinkling of powdered sugar, but we love them with Caramel Sauce, Homemade Chocolate Sauce, and Homemade Whipped Cream or ice cream!

Sounds amazing! I guess there’s no way to make the crispy/hard sugar turon topping with this air fry method? Can I make it in a pot and drizzle it?
