Made with chocolate almond milk, Greek yogurt, cocoa powder, and banana, this Chocolate Banana Smoothie is thick and creamy with just the right amount of sweetness. Enjoy for breakfast, after a workout, or as a midday pick-me-up!
Along with my orange julius and coffee banana smoothie, this chocolate banana smoothie is a go-to in my home. It makes a great quick breakfast, post-workout fuel booster, or after-school snack for the kids but I also enjoy it as a healthy afternoon snack myself. It’s made with chocolate, peanut butter, yogurt, and banana so it’s sweet and chocolate-y but still has those ingredients to keep you full and prevent it from being a straight-up dessert.
What’s in This Chocolate Banana Smoothie Recipe?
This easy chocolate smoothie recipe is made with just a few ingredients. (Scroll down to the recipe card for the exact measurements.)
- Chocolate almond milk – Almond milk is my preferred milk and using chocolate adds more of that rich chocolatey goodness to the smoothie. You can swap this for your preferred milk.
- Vanilla Greek yogurt – Greek yogurt adds a thick, creamy texture to the smoothie as well as a bit of protein.
- Creamy peanut butter – If you’re not a peanut butter fan, feel free to skip this. You can also use almond butter.
- Banana – Use a very ripe, large banana for this recipe (but not one so ripe that it’s full of brown spots). The riper the banana, the sweeter the smoothie will be.
- Unsweetened cocoa powder – For added chocolate flavor.
- Crushed ice
Smoothie Variations
There are lots of ways to customize this recipe. Here are a few ideas:
- Add some greens. A handful or two of spinach leaves is a great way to add some veggies to this smoothie. You won’t even taste it!
- Add some protein. If you want to load this smoothie up with some protein, you can add a scoop or two of your favorite protein powder. I recommend chocolate, peanut butter, or unflavored. If you use chocolate, you can omit the cocoa powder.
- Add some seeds. Chia, flax, and hemp seeds can all be added to this smoothie as desired.
- Use your favorite milk. Any milk, dairy or plant-based, can be used in this recipe. You can use regular unsweetened or vanilla almond milk if you don’t have chocolate on hand and just add more chocolate.
Can I Make This In Advance?
This chocolate banana smoothie is best enjoyed immediately. However, if you have too many ripe bananas, you can cut them into pieces and freeze them ahead of time. (And you may not need the ice if using frozen bananas.)
