This Red, White, and Blue Jello is my easy, make-ahead answer to a fun 4th of July treat! Strawberry and berry blue jello cubes are suspended in a creamy sweetened condensed milk gelatin mixture, so every slice looks like little pieces of stained glass. Itโs cool, fruity, festive, and so much easier than pouring and chilling a bunch of perfect red, white, and blue layers!

Red White and Blue Stained Glass Jello
This is a festive 4th of July twist on my broken glass jello (aka stained glass jello), a retro dessert made with colorful jello cubes in a sweet and creamy white gelatin base. It looks like a fancy mosaic once itโs sliced, but the method is simple, very forgiving, and honestly pretty fun! You make the red and blue jello ahead, cut it into cubes, scatter them in a 9ร13 dish, then pour the cooled creamy mixture over the top and let the refrigerator do the rest. The most important detail is letting the white mixture cool to the touch before pouring, which keeps the red and blue cubes bright and clean instead of melted or streaky.
Since this patriotic jello needs plenty of chill time, itโs a great make-ahead dessert for cookouts, potlucks, and parties. Trust me, these neat little squares are always a hit with kids and adults!
Helpful Tips and Variations
- Use any red jello. I use strawberry because itโs easy to find and gives the dessert a classic fruity flavor. Cherry or raspberry jello will also work great with the berry blue.
- Sugar-free jello is fine. You can use sugar-free red or blue jello in this recipe if preferred.
- Donโt prepare the jello according to the box! The package directions use more water than this recipe needs. You will not be mixing in cold water. Using less water gives you firmer red and blue pieces that hold their shape better once theyโre mixed into the creamy white layer.
- Use shallow containers for the colored jello. Pour each flavor into its own rectangular dish or container, keeping the jello no more than about 1 inch deep, if possible. Thinner Jello sets faster, usually in about 2-3 hours, and itโs much easier to cut into neat cubes. If the jello is too thick, the cubes can look bulky in the finished dessert and will be harder to scatter evenly in the 9ร13 dish.
- Let the white mixture cool before pouring. You donโt want it to solidify in the bowl, but it should cool until it feels close to room temperature. If itโs at all warm, it can soften or melt the red and blue jello cubes.

How to Make Red White Blue Jello Step by Step

Gather all of your ingredients.

Make the red and blue jello: Add a family size 6 oz. box strawberry jello to one shallow container and a 6 oz. box berry blue jello to a second shallow container. Stir 2 cups boiling water into each flavor until completely dissolved with no granules left at the bottom. Use containers where the jello is no more than 1 inch deep so it sets firmly and is easy to cut into cubes.
Transfer both containers to the refrigerator and chill until fully set. The jello should feel firm, glossy, and spring back slightly when touched.

Slice into cubes: Once set, cut each flavor into small square cubes. Try to keep the cubes similar in size so every slice has a pretty mix of red and blue. Add the jello cubes to a 9ร13 glass dish coated with nonstick spray and gently toss them together into an even layer. Use a light hand here so the cubes donโt tear or break.

Make the condensed milk mixture: In a medium bowl, dissolve 2 (0.25 oz.) envelopes of unflavored gelatin in 2 cups hot water, whisking until fully dissolved. Let the mixture cool slightly, then whisk in a 14 oz. can sweetened condensed milk and 1 tsp clear vanilla until smooth and creamy.

Assemble and chill: Let the condensed milk mixture cool until itโs no longer warm to the touch. This is important because if itโs at all warm, it can melt the jello cubes and muddy the colors instead of giving you those bright, stained-glass pieces.
Slowly and evenly pour the cooled condensed milk mixture over the jello cubes, making sure it settles into all the gaps. Refrigerate overnight, or until completely firm and sliceable. When ready to serve, cut into squares with a sharp knife. For cleaner edges, wipe the knife between cuts and serve chilled. Enjoy!

Serving Suggestions
This red white and blue jello is great for slicing into squares for a 4th of July party or for Memorial Day weekend. Serve the squares chilled straight from the refrigerator. Theyโre fun as-is, but a little dollop of whipped cream or Cool Whip on top makes them even more dessert-like. For a full patriotic dessert spread, Iโd serve them with my red white and blue poke cake if you want another colorful jello dessert, red white and blue fruit kabobs for something fresh and simple, and red white and blue muddy buddies for a crunchy, snacky treat everyone can grab by the handful!
How to Store Leftovers
Store any leftovers tightly covered in the refrigerator with plastic wrap or a lid. This helps keep it fresh and prevents it from absorbing any other smells or flavors from the fridge. Itโll keep well for up to 4 days. I donโt recommend freezing this red white and blue jello because the texture can become watery and rubbery once thawed.
