There’s so much hype in the food blogging community lately regarding Greek yogurt, you’d think it was gold. Jennifer, at My Recipes, even proclaimed that “her view on yogurt changed for life” after eating it. Really? That’s quite an endorsement.
So, when Stonyfield Farm contacted me and wanted to know if I’d like to try their new Oikos Greek Yogurt, I happily accepted. I knew I’d like it, though. I’m a big fan of the Stonyfield brand, in general. Their ingredients are pure and organic. My kids consumed a lot of YoBaby yogurt their first year, and now Stonyfield’s low-fat yogurt always occupies a shelf in my refrigerator.
The question was, how much would I like this Oikos Greek Yogurt?
I decided to test it out on this Turkey Keema recipe.
I made one with plain yogurt and one with the Greek yogurt.
There’s definitely a difference. It’s a lot thicker than regular yogurt; similar to the consistency of sour cream. And it’s tangy, with more flavor. I was also very impressed that it didn’t taste non-fat, even though it is.
It was really good. Like a game changer. I get it now. The one downside is that it’s expensive. I actually had a little sticker shock when I saw that a 16-ounce container was over $5.00. (However, I gather the high cost is because there’s less water and more milk solids, and thus more protein.) To offset the cost, though, you could make the tub last a while if you use it sparingly.
I would definitely buy this product again. Not regularly, due to our budget constraints right now, but certainly on occasion. I’ve seen several recipes where it’s used in baked goods, so I’ll probably try it that way next time.
Now, back to this keema recipe for a minute…DELISH. Paul must have said ten times how awesome they were. They really were.
loving this post and the Greek yogurt! :)
Where the Orange Blossoms Grow – it is from my childhood and I think we sang it in the Brownies. I lived in south Florida as a child and it was popular there. I always smile when I think of it! Lyrics – I want to wake up in the morning where the orange blossoms grow, where the sun comes creepin into where I’m sleepin and the songbird says hello. I like the fresh air and the sunshine, it’s so good for us you know, and to make my home in Davie, where the orange blossoms grow.
** I know I’m late as I just found this site while researching Oikos. I thought I would submit anyway.
The song that always makes me happy is “Every Day I Write the Book” by Elvis Costello. Let me win.
I like “Blackbird” by the BEAtles. It maeks me sort of wistfully happy. I live in Canada so if I get randomized can the prize be sent to my mom in Yakima?
I love greek yogurt, and love it even more when it’s free! That flatbread recipe looks great.
Who doesn’t love “Afternoon Delight” by Starland Vocal Band???
Guilty by Barbara Streisand and Barry Gibb. I remember my mother cleaning the house with that record blaring and she was singing at the top of her lungs. I can not get that image out of my mind so the only thing I can do is laugh about it.
Your blog is awesome! I just discovered it and found this post, so a perfect time to post a comment for me! Yay! The one song that always brings a smile and sometimes happy tears to my eyes is “The Raindow Connection”, especially the Kermit the Frog version.
If you want to be you, be you. Cat stephens
I love greek yogurt. I never was a fan of eating plain yogurt before I tried greek yogurt, but it’s so delicious that I find myself having to ration it when I buy some.
The song “Dreams” by the Cranberries always makes me smile for some reason.
I always wonder about the difference between plain yogurt and Greek yogurt. Now I got the answer here. Tks for the info. My son also loves eating yogurt since he was a baby. Hope this product will enter Singapore one day.
Remember Wham! – before George Michael went solo… “Bad Boys” always makes me want to dance.
These flatbreads look yummy. I love pine nuts, but rarely buy them because they’re so expensive. This recipe just might be worth it. Sure would help if I had some free greek yogurt ;-)
The song that ALWAYS makes me happy is of course Music Together’s “Hello Song”. Anyone who knows it has to agree that you can’t sing it and be in a bad mood. It will always make you smile- even when you’ve had enough!
Heh. No need to enter me into the giveaway… I actually have some coupons of my own. HOWEVER, I have yet to find a grocer that’s not across town where I can buy Oikos! Crazy, but true.
It’s good, though? Maybe worth the drive?
Don’t laugh, but Abba music always cheers me up. Especially when they’re singing, “Money, money, money.” It’s crazy, the upbeat music always makes me wanna dance.
Years ago, I clipped a recipe for what was called “cream cheese” yogurt. Just as Natashya, Musingegret and Zerrin mentioned, the regular yogurt is strained, eliminating all the excess liquid. You end up with a more solid, creamy yogurt. I don’t know if it has the same flavor as Greek yogurt, so I will try some to compare.
I don’t like all the additives in flavored yogurt, so I buy plain and just add fruit, jam or preserves if I want the sweetness. I can then control the amount of fruit. I’m now hungry for yogurt!!!!
John Denver’s songs bring smiles, although I don’t know if they are my all time favorites. Do like Dad’s favorite, too.
I have to say I love your Dad’s song, too, and Chopper has good taste, too. And who doesn’t love Walking with Sunshine- THE classic happy song!
But my new favorite make-me-smile song is… Say Hey I love you by Michael Franti and Spearhead. I’m listening to it now. And I’m grinning from ear to ear.
“Fallin’ for you” by Colbie Caillat =]]
bring on that yogurt!!
I have a recipe for a yogurt pound cake that I would love to try this in.
My favorite song is (Hit Me) Baby One More Time by Britney Spears. (I know, I know.) It is the ring tone on my cell phone for all of my daughter’s phone numbers, so when I hear it I know my daughter is calling. The only thing that makes me happier than that is actually being with her and my grandchildren.
If I Had $1000000 by The Barenaked Ladies, but consider the source. The Minneapolis Duo has the best version.
5 bucks for yogurt? There better be chocolate at the bottom.
Greek yogurt is heaven and has spoiled me for regular yogurt.
Happy song: Uh-Uh-Uh by Hey Willpower.
I don’t need to enter the contest, but I love how good that flatbread sounds!
I love Stonyfield Organic yogurt too – planning to eat a cup of the Blueberry this afternoon (Snack Time). I’ve been wanting to test out some Greek yogurt – so thanks for the tip, I will have to pick up some of the Oikos this weekend. (If I can still get to the store!)
Not really seasonally appropriate – but I can’t help but smile every year when I hear the “I want a hippopotamus for Christmas….” song.
I want a hippopotamus for Christmas
Only a hippopotamus will do
Don’t want a doll, no dinky Tinker Toy
I want a hippopotamus to play with and enjoy.
I want a hippopotamus for Christmas
I don’t think Santa Claus will mind, do you?
He won’t have to use our dirty chimney flue
Just bring him through the front door
That’s the easy thing to do.
I can see me now on Christmas morning
Creeping down the stairs
Oh what joy and what surprise
When I open up my eyes
To see a hippo hero standing there……..
MMM…. yum! I’m hungry already.
Happy song: “Walking on Sunshine” by Katrina and the Waves. Good jumping around song when discouraged!
This looks really yummy. I have never tried Greek yogurt, so I may have to give it a shot.
Song that makes me smile: “Fat Bottomed Girls” by Queen. I don’t know what it is about that song but the minute it starts playing a grin appears.
I’m not a fan of yogurt, but I LOVE Greek yogurt with honey. My wife and I ate it all summer because it was on sale at the co-op. I don’t remember the brand, but the label was actual in Greek and it had a traditional gold Greek design. The Linden Hills co-op still sells it, but last time we looked, it was no longer on sale, and unfortunately – like Amy said – it’s expensive.
Fave “happy” song: “Better Things” by The Kinks.
I only eat yougurt if it is filled with lots of fruit chunks and sugary fruit flavorings. I like spiced Greek yogurt sauce on my Gyro’s, though!
Favorite happy songs: “Uncontrollable Urge” by Devo, “Apeman” by The Kinks and “I Wanna Be Sedated” by The Ramones.
I eat Stonyfield Organic yogurt every morning (Blueberry is in front of me as I type this), but I’m not familiar with Greek yogurt. Now I’ve got to try Oikos.
Lots of songs make me happy. ‘Funny Face’ by Donna Fargo is top of the list today: “Funny face, I love you, funny face, I need you. These are the sweetest words I’ve ever heard” WHA!?!
OMG I LOVE THAT YOGURT. One of the main reasons I sold my soul and started shopping at Wal-Mart is that they have the lowest price around on Oikos yogurt. In fact, I just finished my morning cup. MMM.
Happy song: Right now, it’s “This Is How We Go Out,” by Leslie & the LYs.
I am such a greek yogurt fan and Oikos is actually one of my favorite brands. There are other good ones out there…I can get Chobani at BJ’s for not so much money and Trader Joe’s brand is also pretty cheap. I do have a certain loyalty to Stonyfield though…you can’t beat only having two ingredients in yogurt! These flatbreads look amazing! I love flatbread…bread…carbs. Lol. My happy song is Just Like Heaven by The Cure. It always puts me in a good mood!
That flatbread recipe is really unusual. I can’t wait to try it!
My happy song is “Here” by the group HelloGoodbye. It reminds me of summer roadtrips to the beach with my best friends in high school every time I listen to it. Now that we are flung across the globe, it makes me happy to think of them when I listen to it. Plus it just makes you want to get up and dance!
The flatbreads with Greek yogurt sound delicious! I do love Oikos Greek yogurt and especially the fact that it’s fat free and yet it tastes great. Since I’ve tried the samples, I’ve been buying a container of plain yogurt every week.
I love “Dont worry baby” by the beach boys!
I know this is so old school, but I love anything by Frank Sinatra. Honestly, I never thought he could sing that well, but I still love his songs and they always make me feel good.
I’ve used Greek yogurt with fruit and honey (really delicious), but not incorporated into a meal like these flatbreads. Must try.
“Holiday” by Madonna. That song has “happy” all over it.
I love Greek Yogurt. Can’t believe you hadn’t tried it yet, Amy!! These flatbreads look fantastic.
I love yogurt and we call the thicker one ‘Strained Yogurt’ as it is strained to get rid of its excessive water. And using it on flatbreads is a great idea!
My happy “go to” song is September by Earth Wind & Fire. How ironic to run your contest in the same month! I’ll probably win right? ;^)
hmmm the song that makes me happy?? i have trouble picking just ONE!
I would have to say Real Mccoy “Beautiful life” such a great workout song and so catchy! it just always pep’s me right up!!
love love love greek yogurt, so versitile, thick and tasty! :)
Like Natashya, but using store-bought yogurt, I just dump a cartonful into a colander or strainer lined with a coffee filter, set it in a bowl in the fridge for a few hours and voila! Thick, creamy yogurt ready for honey and walnuts for dessert or cukes, garlic, olive oil and lemon for tzatziki sauce. Yum! Whenever I hear the Doobies play “What a Fool Believes” I get up and dance and smile. ;-)
I lurve Greek Yogurt. Really I do. My favorite happy song? You can laugh if you want, but I have loads, but I’ll confine myself to the top three. One of them is “Beethoven’s 9th Symphony”. The next is “I would walk 500 miles” by the Proclaimers. Another is “Graceful & Charming (Sweet Forget-Me-Not) by Great Big Sea (of course, you could pretty much substitute almost any other GBS song for a quick pick-me-up.)
I freakin’ love Greek yogurt. Expensive, but sooooo worth it.
My ultimate happy song: No One Like You, Scorps
That sounds really tasty!
Looks tasty! I make my own yogurt, and strain it in the fridge to make Greek-style.
I am in Canada though, so don’t put me in the draw.
Fave song that makes me happy? Lime in the Coconut!
…such a silly woman!…if you call me in the morning I will tell you what to take……
Beautiful by Carole King
“You’ve got to get up every morning with a smile on your face
And show the world all the love in your heart
Then people gonna treat you better
You’re gonna find, yes, you will
That you’re beautiful as you feel”
I have that recipe marked in Every Day Food- I will definitely try it now!
The song that always makes me happy when I hear it is- Kokomo by the Beach Boys, it is the first song I remember really liking as a kid.
