Healthy Green Smoothie

During the week, I’m all about light and healthy, and this green smoothie is on permanent rotation at my house. One I never get tired of, no matter how many times I make it. Let’s be honest – the first time you add three cups of spinach to a blender, it feels like a leap of faith. But spinach is a chameleon. It completely disappears into the flavor, leaving only that beautiful green color behind. What you actually taste is the bright sweetness of pineapple juice, the natural creaminess of frozen banana, and a subtle tang from Greek yogurt that makes it feel a little more interesting than your average breakfast smoothie.

This recipe is also a little different from most. Instead of mango or almond milk, we use green grapes and pineapple juice as the base. The grapes add a gentle tartness that works beautifully with the pineapple, and freezing them means you don’t need ice, keeping the flavor concentrated rather than watered down. Plus, the Greek yogurt brings 8 grams of protein per serving, making this genuinely filling rather than just pretty.

Helpful Tips & Variations

  • Want to boost the protein? Add a scoop of vanilla protein powder to the frozen fruit. It blends in seamlessly and brings this smoothie well over 20 grams of protein per serving, making it a solid post-workout meal replacement.
  • Blend the spinach with the liquid first. Add the pineapple juice, Greek yogurt, and spinach to the blender and blend before adding anything else. This breaks the spinach down completely so you get a silky smooth result with no leafy bits. If you have a high-powered blender, you can skip this, but for a standard blender, this step makes a real difference.
  • Use a ripe, well-frozen banana. Let your bananas get fully ripe before slicing and freezing them. A ripe frozen banana adds natural sweetness so you need less honey, and gives the smoothie a thick, creamy texture that a fresh banana just can’t match.
  • Want it thicker? Make sure your grapes and banana are frozen solid, at least 4 hours, but ideally overnight. Partially frozen fruit is the most common reason a smoothie turns out thin. If it’s already blended and too loose, add a small handful of ice and blend again.

BEST Green Smoothie

Prep: 5 minutes
Total: 5 minutes
Servings: 2 servings
Sweet, tangy, and totally refreshing, this green smoothie blends spinach, banana, grapes, pineapple juice, and Greek yogurt into a creamy 5-minute breakfast you'll want every morning.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup pineapple juice
  • ½ cup plain Greek Yogurt
  • 3 cups fresh baby spinach
  • 1 tbsp honey
  • 1 cup green grapes, frozen
  • 1 small banana, cut into chunks and frozen

Instructions

  • Put pineapple juice, Greek yogurt, and spinach into a blender; blend until spinach is fully incorporated.
  • Add in remaining ingredients and blend until smooth.
  • Pour into glasses and enjoy!

Notes

  • Blend the spinach with the liquid first for the smoothest texture, no leafy bits.
  • Use fully frozen grapes and banana. This is what makes the smoothie thick, not ice.
  • Taste before adding honey. A ripe banana is often sweet enough on its own.
  • Want it thicker? Add 1 cup of ice and blend again.

How to Make a Green Smoothie Step by Step

Green smoothie ingredients

Gather all the ingredients together.

Spinach and Greek yogurt in a blender with pineapple juice being poured in, next to the same ingredients fully blended into a smooth green liquid

Blend the spinach with the liquid base: Add 1 cup pineapple juice, ½ cup Greek yogurt, and 3 cups fresh spinach to the blender. Blend on high for about 30-45 seconds, until the spinach is completely smooth and no green flecks remain. The mixture will look like a thin, bright green juice at this stage. That’s exactly right.

Frozen green grapes and banana added to a blender with green smoothie base, next to the finished smoothie blended until smooth

Add the frozen fruit and honey: Add 1 cup frozen green grapes, 1 frozen banana (cut into chunks), and 1 tbsp honey to the blender. You’ll feel the blender start to work harder as the frozen fruit thickens everything up quickly.

Blend until smooth and creamy: Blend on high for another 45-60 seconds, scraping down the sides once if needed. The finished smoothie should be thick, smooth, and a vivid green color. It will have a slightly looser consistency than a smoothie made with almond milk, and that’s totally normal. If you want it thicker, add 1 cup of ice cubes and blend for another 30 seconds.

Pour and enjoy immediately: Pour into two tall glasses and drink right away. Green smoothies are best the moment they’re made. The color stays brightest, and the texture is at its peak.

Serving Suggestions

This green smoothie is a complete breakfast on its own, thanks to the protein from the Greek yogurt and the natural sugars from the fruit. But if you want to round out your morning, here are a few pairings that work really well.

With scrambled eggs. The smoothie covers your greens and fruit in one shot, so a side of scrambled eggs is all you need for a complete, balanced breakfast. Creamy eggs plus a cold, bright smoothie is honestly one of my favorite weekday combos.

With breakfast egg muffins. If you’re meal prepping for the week, make a batch of Breakfast Egg Muffins alongside a few freezer smoothie packs. Both come together in minutes in the morning and keep you full until lunch. They’re a natural match.

For a weekend brunch spread. Pair the smoothie with Banana Oatmeal Pancakes for a brunch that feels a little more special without a lot of extra effort. The banana in both recipes ties the flavors together, and the pancakes are naturally gluten-free and dairy-free.

For kids. Pour into small cups and call it a “superhero smoothie.” Kids love the bright green color and genuinely cannot taste the spinach. Serve alongside a simple Peach Yogurt Parfait for a fun, nutritious breakfast they’ll actually ask for again.

How to Store Leftovers

Pour leftover smoothie into a mason jar or airtight container, filling it all the way to the top to minimize air exposure. Store for up to 24 hours. Give it a good shake or stir before drinking. Separation is normal and doesn’t mean it’s gone bad. The color may darken slightly, but the flavor holds up well.

Freezer

Smoothie Packs: This is the best make-ahead method. Portion the spinach, frozen grapes, and frozen banana into zip-top freezer bags (leave out the yogurt and juice). Seal, label, and freeze for up to 3 months. When you’re ready to blend, just dump a pack into the blender, add the pineapple juice and yogurt, and blend as directed. Breakfast is done in under 2 minutes.

Blended Smoothie: You can freeze the fully blended smoothie in a mason jar (leave 1 inch of headspace for expansion) for up to 1 month. Thaw overnight in the fridge and shake well before drinking. Texture will be slightly less creamy than fresh, but still very good.

More Smoothie Recipes We Love

  • Banana Smoothie: If you love the creamy banana base in this green smoothie, you’ll want to try this one on its own. It’s rich, naturally sweet, and comes together in just a few minutes — perfect for mornings when you want something simple and satisfying.
  • Strawberry Smoothie: For anyone who wants that same creamy, fruit-forward smoothie vibe but in a pink instead of green version. Great for kids who are warming up to smoothies.
  • Lemon Smoothie: If the tangy-sweet balance in this green smoothie is your thing, the lemon smoothie delivers that same bright, citrusy quality in a completely different and unexpected way.
