Fun & Easy Summer Dessert

If you love the flavors of a banana split, you’re going to love this summer treat! This is one of my favorite ways to use up bananas in the summer and is a twist between a chocolate dipped banana and a banana split.

Bananas are cut into bite-sized pieces then dipped in semi-sweet chocolate and rolled in sprinkles and chopped nuts. And don’t forget the cherry! All of the best banana split toppings in one little bite.

Kids love these and it’s a dessert that they can help make too, which makes it even more fun!

Ingredients Needed

Here are the few ingredients you’ll need to make this easy banana dessert.
(Scroll below to the printable recipe card for details and measurements.)

  • Bananas – Bananas that are ripe but not yet brown or mushy are perfect.
  • Chocolate candy melts. We prefer candy melts over regular chocolate because of their melting ability and smooth texture. Plus, it hardens so the bites can sit out at room temperature without softening. (See tip below for other options.)
  • Garnishes – These banana split bites are dipped in chopped peanuts and rainbow sprinkles. I like to add maraschino cherries as a topping as well.

How to Make Frozen Banana Split Bites

This fun summer dessert comes together in a few easy steps. Just remember to prepare the frozen bananas in advance and leave time for the chocolate to set before enjoying.
(Scroll below to the printable recipe card for details and measurements.)

  1. Freeze the bananas. Slice the bananas into even 1 & 1/2-inch thick rounds. Freeze on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper until solid, about 4 hours.
  2. Melt the candy melts. Melt the chocolate candy melts according to package directions, until smooth and silky.
  3. Dip the bananas. Dip the banana pieces into the chocolate, covering them completely. Drip off any excess chocolate. Roll half of the bananas in the crushed peanuts and the other half in the sprinkles.
  4. Chill. Place the coated bananas on the baking sheet, upright. Add a maraschino cherry to the top, then freeze until the chocolate is completely set, about 20 minutes.

Serving Suggestions

Keep these chocolate-covered banana bites in the fridge or freezer until just before enjoying. They make a great treat for hot days when you crave something sweet and cool. You can grab a bite and enjoy as-is or even serve these with a few scoops of ice cream like a traditional banana split.

Proper Storage

Once the chocolate has set, transfer them to an airtight container and then back into the fridge or freezer. They’ll keep for at least a week.

Frozen Banana Split Bites

Prep: 15 minutes
Chill Time: 4 hours 20 minutes
Total: 4 hours 35 minutes
Servings: 12 bites
With all the flavors of a banana split wrapped up in one chocolate-covered bite, these Frozen Banana Split Bites are a fun summer treat. Quick and easy to make!

Ingredients

  • 2 large ripe bananas
  • 1 cup chocolate candy melts, (see note)
  • finely chopped peanuts
  • rainbow sprinkles
  • maraschino cherries, , stems removed and patted dry

Instructions

  • Slice bananas crosswise into even 1 & 1/2-inch thick rounds. Place pieces on a parchment-lined baking sheet and transfer to the freezer until firm, about 4 hours.
  • Place crushed peanuts in a shallow bowl and sprinkles in another shallow bowl.
  • Place the chocolate candy melts in a microwave-safe bowl and melt according to package directions until smooth and silky (but not hot.)
  • Using a fork, dip the banana pieces (one at a time) into the melted chocolate to cover (spooning some on top, if necessary, to cover); remove tapping on the side of the bowl to let any excess chocolate drip off.
  • Roll half of the chocolate coated banana pieces in the crushed peanuts, and roll the rest of the chocolate bananas in the sprinkles (only the sides should be coated, not the bottom or tops.)
  • Place back on the parchment-lined baking sheet upright and top with a maraschino cherry before the chocolate hardens.
  • Place in the freezer until chocolate is set, about 20 minutes.

Notes

Substitute for candy melts. Ghirardelli Melting Wafers or Almond Bark are both good substitutes for candy melts. You can use and equal amount of semisweet chocolate chips, if preferred, but you’ll need melt them with 2 tablespoons of coconut oil to get the silky texture and ability to harden properly.
