With a perfectly crispy exterior skin and wonderfully fluffy middle, once you make an Air Fryer Baked Potato, you might never put them in the oven again. Just a couple simple steps and 4 ingredients required for the best baked potato you’ve ever had.
We love the air fryer for the crispy results it provides while cutting the cooking time in half, like with our Air Fryer Pork Chops and Air Fryer Onion Rings.
The Best Air Fryer Potatoes
If you’ve got an air fryer, but haven’t made baked potatoes in it yet, do it! They turn out so crispy on the outside, with a fluffy, buttery center. And unlike traditional oven baked potatoes, they cook quicker and you don’t need to have your oven on for such a long time.
Similar to my air fryer baked sweet potatoes, this is a primarily hands-off recipe. Just wash and season the potatoes, pop them in the air fryer, and come back a short time later. While I’m usually all about those baked potato toppings, I actually find that these are perfect just with a dab of butter.
Ingredients Needed
You’ll need just 4 ingredients for this easy air fryer recipe.
(Scroll below to the printable recipe card for details and measurements.)
- Potatoes – Russet potatoes are my go-to for making any baked potatoes. Make sure they’re all the same size for even cooking.
- Butter – I used salted butter for extra flavor.
- Garlic and herb seasoning – I use the Dash brand, salt-free garlic and herb seasoning for this recipe, since I’m also adding salt. You can use any garlic and herb mixture that you prefer or even use Italian seasoning instead. If your seasoning is salted, omit the additional salt.
- Salt
Optional Toppings
There is really no wrong way to eat a baked potato. This air fryer method gives a nice, flavorful potato with an edible, crispy peel, and honestly, I think with just a little salted butter is a perfect way to enjoy it. However, you can also serve it with all your favorite toppings. Here are a few ideas:
- Shredded cheese and sour cream
- Broccoli florets or green onions and bacon
- Salsa (especially for a lower calorie side!)
- Butter
- Chives
- Greek yogurt (for some added protein)
How Long Do You Cook Baked Potatoes In The Air Fryer?
The exact amount of time needed to make air fryer baked potatoes will depend on the size of your potatoes and your air fryer. I find 35 to 40 minutes to be the perfect amount of time, though if you have large potatoes, you may need to increase the cook time. You should be able to easily pierce the potato with a fork without resistance when it’s done.
How to Make Air Fryer Baked Potatoes
This is, hands down, the easiest way to make a baked potato.
(Scroll below to the printable recipe card for details and measurements.)
- Prepare the potatoes. Scrub the potatoes to clean them, then pat dry. Poke all over with a fork.
- Season the potatoes. Coat the potatoes in butter then sprinkle with the seasonings.
- Cook. Place the potatoes in the air fryer. Cook at 400F for 30 minutes, then using tongs, flip and cook for another 5 to 15 minutes, until fully cooked and a knife is able to easily pierce through the center.
- Enjoy. Cut the potatoes open, fluff the middle, and serve with your favorite toppings.
Tips & Variations
This baked potato recipe is beyond easy but there are still a few things to keep in mind for making the best baked potato.
- Butter substitutions. You can substitute the salted butter with unsalted if preferred, or rub the potatoes with bacon grease (our favorite!) or vegetable oil instead.
- Use potatoes roughly the same size. If you’ll be air frying more than one potato, make sure they’re all more or less the same size to ensure they all finish cooking at the same time.
- Don’t crowd the air fryer. My air fryer fits three potatoes easily, with plenty of room between each one. However, if you have a smaller air fryer, you may only be able to cook two at a time. You don’t want the potatoes to be touching or crowded in the basket or the potatoes won’t develop that desirable crispy skin.
What to Serve With a Baked Potato
The wonderful thing about a baked potato, loaded or not, is that it can go with pretty much any meal. Personally, I’m a huge fan of steak and baked potatoes, like you’d get at a steak house. Baked chicken breast and air fryer pork chops are also good options.
How to Store & Reheat Leftovers
- Storing leftovers. If you have leftovers you can store these air fryer baked potatoes either wrapped in foil or in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 3-4 days.
- Reheat. They can be reheated in the microwave but for best results, allow them to come to room temperature and reheat in the air fryer for 15 or so minutes or until heated through.
