Ingredients Needed

You only need 3 simple ingredients to make this easy strawberry cake recipe, plus optional powered sugar.
(Scroll below to the printable recipe card for details and measurements.)

  • Angel Food Cake Mix โ€“ A 16 ounce box of your preferred brand. I use Betty Crocker but Duncan Hines or any other brand works fine. Youโ€™ll be using just the powder, do not add water, eggs, oil, or anything else.
  • Strawberry Pie Filling โ€“ A 21 ounce can.
  • Vanilla โ€“ This adds a nice touch of extra flavor.
  • Powered sugar (optional) โ€“ Feel free to dust the baked, cooled cake with a little powdered sugar for a hint of of sweetness and lovely presentation.

Tips and Variations

  • Avoid regular white cake mix. Do not swap the angel food cake mix with regular white cake mix or this dessert will not turn out properly.
  • Do not use strawberry Jello pudding. Jello pudding and strawberry pie filling are not interchangeable. Strawberry pudding will change the consistency of this snack cake.
  • Add in some fresh cut strawberries. Feel free to toss in up to 1/3 of a cup of fresh chopped strawberries.
  • Donโ€™t overmix or overbake. Donโ€™t overmix your batter or the cake will be tough, and make sure to keep an eye on the cake toward the end of bake time to make sure itโ€™s not overbaking or itโ€™ll end up dry and crumbly.

Serving Suggestions

I usually dust the baked, cooled cake with some powdered sugar or a drizzle of icing. This is completely optional and not needed for the cake to turn out, but it does add an extra level of deliciousness and visual appeal.

Proper Storage

This strawberry cake is best eaten the day itโ€™s made, but leftovers will keep for a bit longer.

  • Fridge. Store any leftovers in the refrigerator in an airtight container with wax paper or cling wrap in-between any layers. It will keep for 3 to 4 days.
  • Freezer. You can also freeze either the whole cake or cut into portions. Wrap tightly, then transfer to a freezer safe Ziploc bag. Freeze for up to 2 months. Thaw in the refrigerator overnight or set out on the counter at room temperature for about 30 minutes.
