Craving pizza but want something a little different? This easy homemade stromboli recipe is a fun twist on pizza night! I make this with my homemade pizza dough and homemade pizza sauce but you can absolutely make it with store-bought dough and sauce. It’s loaded up with ham, pepperoni, salami, and mozzarella cheese though it’s easily customizable using items you already have on hand.

What’s in This Easy Stromboli Recipe?

This stromboli recipe is made with almost the same ingredients as homemade pizza. You can find the exact measurements in the recipe card below, and step-by-step photos below that.

  • Pizza dough – If you use my homemade pizza dough recipe cut it in half, or simply double all these ingredients and make 2 stromboli. Otherwise, a 1 pound refrigerated pizza dough round from the store works great.
  • Pizza sauce – I love my homemade pizza sauce here but you can also grab a jar at the store.
  • Mozzarella cheese – Freshly shredded will melt the best.
  • Fresh parsley – Finely chopped for added flavor.
  • Meat – I load my homemade stromboli with Italian salami, deli honey ham, and pepperoni.
  • Egg & Milk – Mixed together for an egg wash that’s brushed on the dough so it gets nice and golden as it bakes.
  • Parmesan cheese – Freshly grated if you can.
  • Spices – Italian seasoning and garlic powder.

Other Filling Ideas

You can add pretty much any pizza topping you want to your stromboli. Just make sure not to load up too much or the dough won’t cook properly. Here are some ideas:

  • Other Italian meats like prosciutto, capicola, or soppressata
  • Mushrooms
  • Cooked peppers or onions
  • Sliced deli cheese, such as provolone
  • Spinach
  • Basil leaves

Tips & Variations

  • Don’t overfill. Feel free to customize the filling of your stromboli as you’d like. However, try to keep an equal amount of meat and cheese as what’s listed in the recipe. Otherwise, you may have trouble rolling it and the dough won’t cook properly.
  • Swap pizza sauce with garlic butter. Some people prefer to just dip their stromboli in pizza sauce instead of baking it inside. That’s totally fine! You can either brush the dough with garlic butter to add extra flavor inside or just skip it.
  • Roll the dough evenly. When rolling out your pizza dough, try to make sure it’s all an even thickness, especially in the center. If any areas are too thin, it will break as you roll the stromboli.
  • Prevent browning. If you notice the dough browning too quickly while baking, you can tent it with foil.

Proper Storage

  • Fridge. Leftover stromboli can be stored in the fridge for 3-4 days. Just keep it in an airtight container or wrap it tightly in foil.
  • Freezer. To freeze your homemade stromboli, allow it to cool completely. Then wrap tightly in plastic wrap and again in foil. Freeze for up to 3 months. Thaw in the fridge then bake at 350F until heated through.
  • Reheat. The easiest way to reheat individual pieces of stromboli is in the microwave. If you are reheating the whole stromboli, you can do so in the oven, with foil tented over the top.

Assorted cured meats and cheese are rolled up in pizza dough in this Easy Stromboli recipe. It's saucy, cheesy, super easy to make, and customizable with your favorite toppings!

Ingredients

  • 1 pound pizza dough, (if you use my homemade recipe, cut it in half)
  • 1/2 cup pizza sauce, , plus more for dipping
  • 2 cups freshly shredded mozzarella cheese, , divided
  • 1 tablespoon finely chopped fresh parsley
  • 8 slices dry Italian salami
  • 6 thin slices deli honey ham
  • 14 slices pepperoni
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tablespoon milk
  • 1/4 cup grated parmesan cheese
  • 1/4 teaspoon Italian seasoning
  • pinch garlic powder

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 400ยฐF. Line a large rimmed baking sheet with parchment paper and set aside.
  • Roll the dough out into a large rectangle approximately 10×15 inches.
  • Spread the pizza sauce on top, leaving a 2-inch border around the edges.
  • Sprinkle 1 cup of mozzarella cheese evenly over the top of the dough, followed by the chopped parsley, salami, ham, and pepperoni, then sprinkle the remaining 1 cup cheese on top of the meats. Beat together the egg and milk to create an egg wash and brush the edges of the dough with some of it.
  • Roll up the dough like a jelly roll. Pinch the two ends together and tuck them under. Place the stromboli seam side down on the parchment paper.
  • Brush the top with the egg wash, then sprinkle with the parmesan cheese, Italian season, and garlic powder. Using a sharp knife, gently cut slits into the top of the dough every 2 inches (this allows steam to escape.)
  • Bake for 22-25 minutes, or until bubbly and golden and cooked through in the middle. (Keep an eye on it and tent with foil if you notice it browning too quickly.)
  • Remove from the oven and allow to cool on pan for 10 minutes before slicing, then slice into 2-inch pieces. Garnish with extra chopped parsley and enjoy with extra pizza sauce for dipping, if desired
