Viral Cookie Croissant Recipe

If you’re on TikTok, you have likely already seen the cookie croissant videos, since they’re taking the FYP by storm right nowโ€ฆand for good reason. Cookie Croissants (croissants stuffed with chocolate chip cookie dough) is the combination you didn’t know you needed, but you most definitely do. If you’re not on TikTok, that’s ok – I’m going to show you how to make them. My version adds in a dollop of Nutella for the ultimate treat, but you can leave it out, if preferred.

What is a Cookie Croissant?

The decadent cookie dough croissant is dominating social media right now, but the original recipe was actually created in 2022 at Maison Louvard, a small bakery from Paris. At its most basic level, it’s simply a buttery croissant stuffed with cookie dough inside and also a layer on top, then baked. But the end result is crispy, gooey, and nothing short of glorious.

If you happen to visit Paris, you can snatch up one of these gems for over $7 bucks. Worth it? IMHO, yes, but steep nonetheless. The good news is, you can easily make Le Crookie at home with just 2 ingredients (or 3 if you add the Nutella) and a few minutes of prep. They are DELISH.

Ingredients Needed

You only need 3 simple ingredients to make this easy cookie croissant recipe: croissants, cookie dough, and Nutella (which is optional.)
(Scroll below to the printable recipe card for details and measurements.)

  • Croissants – You can use any type of plain croissant that you like. I recommend bakery croissants since they taste the best, but grocery store packaged croissants are perfectly fine, too.
  • Chocolate chip cookie dough – For ease, this Crookie recipe just uses store bought refrigerated chocolate chip cookie dough (like Pillsbury or Nestle Toll House), but feel free to use homemade cookie dough if you’ve got the time and motivation. Substitute sugar cookie dough and add 1 cup of chocolate chips for similar results.
  • Nutella (optional) – Substitute another hazelnut spread, peanut butter, or cookie butter spread such as Biscoff if desired.

How to Make Cookie Croissants

Making the viral cookie croissant from Paris at home is so easy in just a few steps.
(Scroll below to the printable recipe card for details and measurements.)

  1. Slice the croissants. Using a sharp serrated knife, slice large croissants in half horizontally lengthwise (but not all the way through.)
  2. Prep the cookie dough. Leave your chilled cookie dough out on the counter for a few minutes to soften, then using a cookie scoop, scoop out dough and flatten into a palm sized disc.
  3. Fill with Nutella (optional). Place 1 heaping teaspoon of Nutella on the center of the cookie disc and then gently fully enclose it with dough, forming a ball again.
  4. Stuff croissants with cookie dough. Place 2 to 3 Nutella stuffed cookie dough balls on the bottom half of each cut croissant, slightly separated from each other (the number of dough balls will depend on the size of croissant used.) Gently press down on the top of each croissant so the cookie balls get flattened.
  5. Cover with more cookie dough. Add another flattened disc of cookie dough to the top of each croissant, so that it covers the majority of the croissant top.
  6. Bake. Place stuffed croissants on a parchment lined baking sheet and bake at 350F for 12-15 minutes or until the cookie dough is golden brown on top and around the edges. (Note: you will want to bake them longer if you prefer your cookies more well-done and less raw cookie dough on the inside. Alternatively, if your croissants are small or mini, the bake time will need to be reduced.)
  7. Cool and serve. Allow the baked croissants to cool for at least 5-10 minutes before removing from the baking sheet. Serve warm and enjoy!

Tips and Variations

This recipe is super easy, but here are a few things you can do to ensure great results every time.

  • The center cookie dough is only “half-baked”. Be aware that the cookie in the center of the croissant is meant to be undercooked. It adds to the gooey decadence of the cookie croissant.
  • Use slightly stale croissants. While this isnโ€™t essential, this is a great way to use up croissants that are getting stale. Croissants that have started to go stale are drier and crisp up very nicely when rebaked with the cookie dough.
  • Don’t slice croissants all the way through. You should be able to open the croissant up like a book.
  • Use room temperature cookie dough. It is easiest to form the dough balls and flatten the dough discs if the cookie dough is at room temperature. This also helps avoid lumps in your dough.
  • You may have leftover cookie dough. The amount of cookie dough needed for the middle will vary depending on the size of your croissants, so you may or may not have leftover cookie dough.
  • Have fun with fillings and mix-ins. You can mix in nuts to the dough for added flavor and texture. The Nutella can be replaced with peanut butter or Biscoff cookie butter. Or simply omit this entirely and spread the dough on the inside croissant instead of making balls.
  • Try it with edible cookie dough. If you are concerned about eating half-baked cookie dough in the middle, edible cookie dough (made without eggs) works for this recipe too with almost the same results.
  • Cook in the air fryer. These can be made in the air fryer at 350F for about 5 minutes.

Serving Suggestions

Enjoy these Cookie Croissants for breakfast, brunch, or dessert. They’re pretty big, so you could easily share one with a friend.

The combination of crisp flaky croissants and warm chocolate chip cookies right from the oven is perfectly delicious as is, but I also sprinkle mine with some powdered sugar or a drizzle of icing. You can also enjoy these dunked in milk like you would classic cookies, or a cup of coffee or tea. For the ultimate summer treat, top your French cookies with a scoop of vanilla ice cream!

Make Ahead and Proper Storage

  • Make in advance. If you’re party planning and want to make these ahead of time, you can assemble the cookie croissants and refrigerate them until ready to bake. They can also be frozen (no need to thaw first if baking from frozen, but you’ll likely need to tack on a few extra minutes to the bake time.)
  • Leftovers. Cookie Croissants are best enjoyed fresh and warm from the oven. However, if you do happen to make more than you can eat, you can wrap them well and store them at room temperature for 2 days or in the fridge for 4 to 5.
  • Reheat. I recommend reheating in the oven for best results, however you can also use a microwave if you donโ€™t mind the croissant potentially getting slightly soggy.

Can't get to Paris? Now you can make the ultra delicious viral Cookie Croissant (Le Crookie) recipe at home! A buttery croissant stuffed with chocolate chip cookie dough and baked for a crisp flaky outside and decadent gooey middle. They're amazing.

Ingredients

  • 4 large croissants
  • 2 cups refrigerated chocolate chip cookie dough, (or homemade), room temperature
  • 1/4 cup Nutella, , optional

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • Using a sharp serrated knife, slice croissants in half horizontally lengthwise (but not all the way through, they should open like a book.) Place them on a parchment-lined baking sheet.
  • Using a cookie scoop, scoop out dough and flatten into a palm sized disc.
  • Dollop 1 heaping teaspoon of Nutella on the center of the cookie disc and then gently fully enclose it with dough, forming a sealed ball.
  • Place 2 to 3 of the Nutella stuffed cookie dough balls on the bottom half of each cut croissant, slightly separated from each other (the number of dough balls will depend on the size of croissant used.) Gently press down on the top of each croissant so the cookie balls get flattened. Add another flattened disc of cookie dough to the top of each croissant, so that it covers the majority of the croissant top.
  • Bake for 12-15 minutes or until the cookie dough is golden brown on top and around the edges. (Note: you will want to bake them longer if you prefer your cookies more well-done and less raw cookie dough on the inside. Alternatively, if your croissants are small or mini, the bake time will need to be reduced – see note below.)
  • Allow the croissants to cool for at least 5-10 minutes before removing from the baking sheet. Serve warm. They're pretty big, so you could easily share one with a friend!

Notes

DISCLAIMER: The middle is under-cooked. Be aware that unlike the cookie dough on top, the cookie in the center of the croissant is meant to be undercooked, per the original recipe in Paris described as “half-baked.” It adds to the gooey decadence of the cookie croissant. If this is not your preference, adjust the bake time accordingly to your liking.
Have fun with fillings and mix-ins. You can mix in nuts to the dough for added flavor and texture. The Nutella can be replaced with peanut butter or Biscoff cookie butter, or stuff the cookie dough with a small piece of your favorite candy bar. Or simply omit this entirely and spread the dough on the inside croissant instead of making balls.
Use edible cookie dough. If you are concerned about eating half-baked cookie dough in the middle, edible cookie dough (made without eggs) works for this recipe too with almost the same results.
You may have leftover cookie dough. The amount of cookie dough needed for the middle will vary depending on the size of your croissants, so you may or may not have leftover cookie dough.
Cook in the air fryer. These can be made in the air fryer at 350F for about 5 minutes.
