An Easy Game Day Appetizer

My friend Sherrill served these salami mozzarella bites the last time a bunch of us were over at her house. She set them out and by the time I got to them, there was only one left! They’re perfectly salty from cured meat and gooey cheese, with a terrific crunch from baked wonton wrappers.

She made them much bigger in egg roll wrappers, which you could also do. But I just love bite-sized appetizers.

Ingredients Needed

You only need 4 ingredients for this party appetizer.
(Scroll below to the printable recipe card for details and measurements.)

  • mozzarella string cheese (these are cut in half, lengthwise, and then again, crosswise so they fit in the wonton wrapper)
  • salami rounds
  • wonton wrappers
  • olive oil
  • parsley (optional, but recommended for garnish)

Recipe Variations

  • Use pepperoni. If salami isn’t your thing, try pepperoni or a different cured meat.
  • Try a different cheese. Mozzarella keeps these very mild, but so many other cheeses would be great. Try classic cheddar or pepper jack for some added heat.
  • Add in a veggie. A small strip of red bell pepper would be good.
  • Top with salt. I did not add any salt because salami is salty enough, but you could sprinkle on a bit of salt before they go in the oven.

How to Make Salami Mozzarella Bites

These mozzarella bites are super easy to make. You simply roll up the cheese and salami in the wonton wrapper like you would an egg roll or burrito, moisten the edges to seal, baste with olive oil and bake, flipping once.
(Scroll below to the printable recipe card for complete details and don’t miss the video below.)

Wrap them securely

What to Serve with Salami Mozzarella Bites

This baked appetizer doesn’t have any additional seasoning, so they really should be served with a dipping sauce. I recommend pairing them with our homemade marinara sauce or homemade pizza sauce.

Moisten remaining corner with water to seal.

Thought these were okay, easy to make. But apparently no one else thought so because they gobbled them up! Ha!

These were so easy to make and were delicious! I even made some without salami to offer an alternative to my kids. Thanks for the fun and easy and DELICIOUS recipe!

  5. Mihra says:

These are very tasty, but I couldn’t find wonton wrappers anywhere in my town. I ended up cutting eggroll wrappers. After trying a couple different ways, I ended up cutting them in triangles. If you try to do rectangles they tend to pop while cooking.

  6. Monica says:

Can these be made the day before? And baked the next day?

    1. Amy @Belly Full says:

Yes, you can prep them the day before, but the wonton wrappers dry out quickly, so make sure you have them wrapped in an airtight container/refrigerated.

  7. Amy says:

Could these be made with Phylo instead? And have you tried them with sandwich pepperoni?

    1. Amy @Belly Full says:

      They’re really good with pepperoni!

    We all loved them!

    1. Amy @Belly Full says:

Hey Dawn – that happens if they’re not sealed properly. If you make them again, just make sure that the cheese is FULLY enclosed in the wrapper and it’s sealed securely.

I found the trick to keeping the contents in the wrapper is to make sure the wonton wrappers are room temperature before assembly. I had several crack, but this technique seemed much better. I also made some homemade honey mustard to serve them with. I have made these before but without the chees and they are a great snack. Seem a little odd, but are really good.

  9. Melissa says:

has anyone tried frying them instead of baking? If so how did it turn out?

I’m on Pinterest, but I have yet to get into it the way everyone else in the world has. Either I don’t have time or I just don’t get it. Either way, I’m not TOO torn up that I don’t have another obsession (yet).

I love these! They’re like little Italian egg rolls. They would be a perfect Super Bowl snack!

  12. Joanne (Inspired Taste) says:

Love this. So simple, but would totally go down well at a party. Thanks for the inspiration!

Well you’ll be happy to know that I FINALLY joined pinterest. AND…if I show up at your door uninvited with all of my belongings…you’ll know that I’ve gotten kicked out of school because of it and am using your place as my hideout from my parents. Deal?

    1. Amy says:

LMAO. Seriously, J…you’re never going to have time to study! My door is always open to you. I’ll be like the witness protection program.

    Slurp.

    1. Amy says:

My list of Superbowl food is expanding by the minute. I need to step away from the computer!

  17. Jill Mant~a SaucyCook says:

Boy talk about fusion! I love the idea of combing hearty Italian fillings with supple Asian WonTon Wrappers. My daughter has been pushing me towards Pinterest, but honestly I’m afraid!

    1. Amy says:

It’s definitely a black hole! I’m going to need an intervention soon.

      1. Heather says:

Could these be made in the air fryer?

        1. Amy @Belly Full says:

Oh, probably! Love that idea. But without further recipe testing, I’m not able to give exact directions/time.

  18. Cathy says:

Nice. And I love the stuff about the list and crossing things out twice!

Note to self: Comment on Amy’s blog.

    Done.

    1. Amy says:

Cathy! I love when I see your name pop up. I always know I’m about to laugh. Done.

  19. Jenna says:

That’s why I’m staying away from Pinterest–I have enough stuff to make saved in my Tasty Kitchen recipe box and from old print-outs (and cookbooks) to keep me busy for years. =) I think it would just overwhelm me with a sense of never being able to get everything done. But I’m glad other people are enjoying it! =) And I’m glad you made this awesome little recipe, which looks perfect for my Bible study (which we’re hosting again next week–so I don’t have to wait long to make ’em).

    1. Amy says:

Jenna, I hear ya. Really. I don’t sleep much ;-)

  20. denise says:

omg these look amazing. i cannot wait to try them! (and super helpful since my 4yr old is on a salami kick!!!)

    1. Amy says:

Hi Denise – that’s funny…my kids are on a salami kick also, which is what gave me the idea :D

  21. pam says:

I always add thing to my list just to cross them off. AND I am adding this to my list!

    1. Amy says:

Somehow I knew that would resonate with you too, Pam. What are we? O.C.D.? A.D.D.? Type A? All of the above?

  22. Melissa says:

“There is much joy when I get to cross stuff off a to-do list. Sometimes I get so excited, I put two lines through the item. Oh, yes I do! Sometimes I even write things on a list that I’ve already accomplished, just so I can have the satisfaction of crossing it off. Can you imagine?!”

    Can I imagine? Ummm…. *whistles*

    ;P

    1. Amy says:

Hee. I KNEW if you read this, you could relate. *high five*

  23. the wicked noodle says:

Oh my! I love you for this! Well, I already loved you, but now I love you EVEN MORE. Pure YUM!! I’m adding these to my Super Bowl spread.

  24. Eliana says:

These look incredible Amy! I may need to add them to my super bowl spread this year.

    1. Amy says:

Whoa! I think I even printed those out last year. I’m sure I did. But then I got sidetracked by the bacon chicken wraps…and they got buried in my never ending pile. All this really does is confirm again that we like the same food :D

I just know I’m going to end up one of those “pinners” who pins things over and over again because I forget I already pinned it. Oy.

      1. Lisa@The Cutting Edge of Ordinary says:

We are very alike foodwise. I do that all the time with the pinning, then I have to go edit. Those Bacon Chicken Wraps are like crack. My family asks for them like every week.

        1. Amy says:

I’ve made them more times than I can count. My BIL requests them frequently. They’re chicken candy!

  25. Sandi says:

Another one for my Super Bowl snack list…..(John’s going to be helping on this one!) T.Y Amy!

    1. Amy says:

By all means enlist John’s help – two sets of hands will cut the prep by 1/2. And hey, he benefits in the end :D
