Sweet and Fruity Cocktail Recipe
Sweet, fruity, and packs a punch is what you get with an Alabama Slammer. It’s made with liqueurs, which are sweeter than liquor, so you can be fooled into thinking it’s not a strong drink. This is definitely a cocktail meant for sipping and I think it’s perfect for those summer evenings hanging out with friends.
What Is An Alabama Slammer?
The Alabama Slammer (sometimes known as the Southern Slammer) is a cocktail that became popular in the 1970s at the University of Alabama. The popularity is likely due to the color (similar to the “Crimson Tide”), along with the fact that the cocktail is downright tasty.
So what’s in an Alabama Slammer? While there are some variations, it’s typically made with Southern Comfort, sloe gin, amaretto, and orange juice for a fruity and sweet drink.
Alabama Slammer Ingredients
This Alabama Slammer cocktail is made with just 4 ingredients – 3 liqueurs and juice.
(Scroll below to the printable recipe card for details and measurements.)
- Amaretto – Adds a nice, sweet almond flavor.
- Sloe gin – This is a sweet liqueur that tastes like plums and adds the red color to the drink. Look for one with a higher proof if possible.
- Southern Comfort – Did you know this is actually a liqueur, not a whiskey? It adds some spice along with fruity undertones to the drink.
- Orange juice – Freshly squeezed if possible or at least a no-sugar added as the liqueurs themselves are very sweet.
- Garnishes – I like to garnish my drink with a maraschino cherry and sliced orange.
Can I Make This Cocktail Less Strong?
There’s no denying this cocktail packs a punch. That’s probably one of the reasons it was so popular on college campuses! I do recommend getting the original Southern Comfort which has the higher proof as well as a higher proof brand of Sloe Gin for the best flavor. If you prefer your cocktails a little less strong, just cut the amount of amaretto, sloe gin, and Southern Comfort in half.
How to Make an Alabama Slammer
Making this cocktail recipe takes just a few seconds, which is another reason to love it!

- Shake. Add all of the liqueurs and orange juice to a shaker with ice. Shake vigorously.
- Pour. Strain into a glass with ice.
- Serve. Garnish with a cherry and orange slice and enjoy!
Can I Make This for a Crowd?
Absolutely. If you want to make this Alabama Slammer for a crowd, just make it in a pitcher instead of individual glasses. Multiple by the ingredients by however many servings you’d like and add them all to a pitcher. Do not add ice. Chill in the fridge until serving, then serve in glasses over ice.
