I originally found this recipe for witches broom cookies in a magazine at my doctor’s office and I knew immediately I would make them. Aren’t they super cute?! They might look complicated, but they’re actually super easy using cookie dough, pretzels, and chocolate. I chose to make a shortbread cookie dough from scratch, but you could definitely use a store-bought dough.

A buttery cookie base with a salty pretzel for the handle and decorated with rich melted chocolate is the perfect trifecta of deliciousness, and they’re so adorable. If you’re hosting a Halloween party or need a treat to bring into the classroom these will be a guaranteed hit!

What’s in This Witches Brooms Cookie Recipe?

All of the ingredients needed to make these Halloween cookies are easily found at the grocery store. You probably have most of them on hand already. (Scroll below to the printable recipe card for details and measurements.)

  • Cookie dough – I made my cookie dough from scratch which calls for flour, brown sugar, softened butter, milk, vanilla, and salt. If you want to make these even quicker, you could use store bought sugar cookie dough.
  • Pretzel Rods – These are the thick pretzels about 8 & 1/2 inches long, not pretzel sticks. You’ll need to cut them in half.
  • Chocolate and Butterscotch chips – Melted and used to decorate the brooms. Candy melts can be used instead, if desired.
  • Coconut oil – This is mixed with the melted chocolate and helps not only for a smoother silky consistency, but also allows the chocolate to harden and remain solid at room temperature. Use one tablespoon of coconut oil for every 12 ounces of chocolate chips. If using candy melts, this ingredient is not needed.

Serving Suggestions

These witches brooms cookies would be perfect for a Hocus Pocus themed party along with Hocus Pocus Cupcakes, Witch Hat Cookies, and Witches Brew Punch! You could use different colored candy melts for each broom to match each witch.

Make Ahead and Proper Storage

  • Make ahead. You can prep the dough or make the brooms up to a day ahead, store in an airtight container, and then decorate when you’re ready.
  • Store on the counter. Once completely cooled and the chocolate has set, these can be stored up to 7 days in an airtight container in a cool, dry place away from heat or moisture.
  • Freezer. Witches Broom Cookies also freeze well for up to 3 months. Place them in a single layer on a parchment-lined baking sheet and freeze until solid. Once solid, transfer them to a freezer-safe, airtight container, separating layers with wax paper to prevent sticking. Thaw the cookies at room temperature when ready to serve.

Servings: 20 brooms
These Witches Broom Cookies are a fun treat for Halloween using cookie dough, pretzel rods, and melted chocolate. Great for a classroom or at-home party!

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup butter, , softened
  • 2 tablespoons milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 & 1/2 cups all-purpose flour, , spooned and leveled
  • 1/8 teaspoon salt
  • 10 pretzel rods, (about 8 1/2 inches long), cut in half crosswise
  • 3 teaspoons coconut oil, , divided
  • 2/3 cup semisweet chocolate chips
  • 1/3 cup butterscotch chips

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 350F.
  • In a medium bowl with an electric mixer, beat brown sugar, butter, milk and vanilla until blended and fluffy. Blend in flour and salt. Shape dough into 20 (1 & 1/4-inch) balls.
  • Place pretzel rod halves on ungreased cookie sheets. Press ball of dough onto cut end of each pretzel rod. Press dough with fork to resemble “bristles” of broom.
  • Bake 10-12 minutes or until set but not brown. Transfer to cooling racks. Cool completely.
  • Line a cookie sheet with parchment paper and place brooms on top.
  • In a microwave-safe bowl, melt chocolate chips and 2 teaspoons of coconut oil for 45 seconds, then check and stir. Continue to microwave in 15-second intervals, stirring each time, until completely melted.
  • Spoon melted chocolate over brooms, leaving about 1 inch at top of pretzel handle and bottom halves of cookie bristles uncovered.
  • In another microwave-safe bowl, repeat melting process with the butterscotch chips and 1 teaspoon coconut oil. Drizzle with melted butterscotch chips.
  • Let stand (or place in the refrigerator for 10-15 minutes) until chocolate is set before serving.

  7. Kim says:

These are too adorable. They make me want to go buy a Barbie doll and dress her up like a witch so she can fly away on one of these. And then I can eat them all and blame it on her. That’s what we grown women do down South.

Ame, these look really yummy, and they are quite esthetically pleasing. If you haven’t given them all away, I’d like a couple. I agree with Dad; great photo too!

  11. Dad says:

Witches’ brooms? I thought they were tomahawks. You realize that you coulda just stuck a pretzel into a peanut butter cup and had a Mounds Bar chaser?

Anyway, very cute, and a great photo. You captured the essence of part of the season.
