Cookie Mix in a Jar

Servings 1 jar for gifting (makes 36 cookies)

I love homemade gifts. The time and thought that goes into creating something from scratch, to give it to someone you care about, is so special. And who doesnโ€™t love cookies? This Cookie Mix in a Jar makes a great gift! It keeps for several months, produces soft chewy cookies, and the mix-ins can be swapped to suit your needs.

Iโ€™m completely smitten with this cookie mix in a jar. Arenโ€™t the layers pretty? Tied with a nice little ribbon with instructions, it makes for such a great housewarming or holiday gift. And the baked cookies are soft and chewy, as any respectable cookie should be!

My mixture is for butterscotch oatmeal cookies, but if butterscotch isn’t your thing, they can be swapped with any chocolate chips like dark, milk, white, cinnamon, peanut butter – you get it! The coconut flakes can be replaced with chopped nuts, and the spices can be altered, too. As long as the ratios stay the same, you’re good to go.

Pair this cookie mix with some other edible gifts like candied pecans and homemade caramels for the most thoughtful and delicious present!

What’s in this Cookie Mix Recipe?

Basic pantry ingredients are needed to make the dry cookie mix and cookies. You can find the exact measurements in the detailed printable recipe card below.

  • Flour – I use regular all-purpose flour. Make sure it’s spooned and leveled for accurate measuring.
  • Baking Soda – Gives the cookies a little lift and helps create the chewy texture.
  • Salt – Just a pinch helps heighten the other flavors and also balances out the sweetness.
  • Spices – Cinnamon and nutmeg provide wonderful aromatics and give the cookies a warm flavor.
  • Sugars – A combination of granulated sugar and brown sugar add the perfect amount of sweetness and tender texture to the cookies.
  • Oats – Old fashioned rolled oats add nice texture to the cookies. Avoid steel cut or instant.
  • Butterscotch chips – As mentioned above, you can swap these out for any flavor chocolate chip if you don’t like butterscotch.
  • Coconut flakes – I use sweetened, but unsweetened coconut flakes are fine, too. If you don’t like coconut, consider swapping them with finely chopped nuts or raisins.
  • Additional wet ingredients – To make the actual cookies, you will also need room temperature butter, egg, and vanilla. Note that these items do not go in the jar.

What Size Jar Do I Need?

The dry mix will fill up a 1-quart container. I like to use a glass jar and layer the dry ingredients for visual appeal, but you can also mix all the dry ingredients together and dump it in the container.

How to Gift this Cookie Mix

There are two very simple parts to giving this cookie mix in a jar as a gift. You can find the complete detailed instruction in the printable recipe card below.

  • Fill the jar. First place your dry ingredients in the jar (as mentioned above, I prefer a glass jar and layering the ingredients so you can see how pretty they are.)
  • Include directions. The second thing is to list the wet ingredients and directions for making the cookies, along with storage information. I create a little note card and attach it to a ribbon tied around the jar (as seen in the photos), but you could also just write (or type) it out on a piece of paper and include it along with the jar.

Proper Storage

  • Dry cookie mix. The dry ingredients, whether layered or mixed together, will last for up to 3 months in the sealed jar or other airtight container, in a cool dry place.
  • Baked cookies on countertop. The baked cookies will stay fairly soft and fresh for up 4 days on the counter. Just keep them stored in an airtight container at room temperature away from light or moisture.
  • Baked cookies in fridge. These can also be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for a couple weeks. Enjoy chilled or let them soften at room temp.
  • Baked cookies in freezer. You can also freeze extra cookies. Just make sure they cool completely, then transfer them to an airtight freezer-safe Ziploc bag or other freezer container. Freeze for up to 3 months. Thaw on the counter.

I planned on making this gift for someone with Celiac disease (so no gluten).
Can I substitute gluten-free flour for the ‘flour’ layer ,along with gluten-free oatmeal and baking soda as well ? Probably need to swap out the butterscotch chips too since not all are gluten-free…So basically, can I make the same item with ALL gluten-free substitutions?

    Thanks

Hi Shelley – I don’t know, sorry. I’m not a gluten free baker and would need to do further testing to see if they’d turn out.

These were seriously the best cookies Iโ€™ve ever baked !! I couldnโ€™t stop eating them. Note I did combo white and chocolate chips along with butterscotch.

I swapped the coconut flakes with pretzels for more crunch. I made a few jars as gifts and made one batch of cookies for my family. LOVED THIS.

I used semi-sweet chips but no other changes. I made 6 of these jars for Friendsgiving gifts and going to make them again for Christmas. I love this so much. Thanks for sharing!

Now that the 5 pound bag of Halloween candy is gone, I could always have mom fill up a bottle like that and ast it with a spoon. It’d be kinds like drilling for oil. I haven’t had butterscotch since I was a kid, but I’ll take my time getting back to it. I have five exams in the next month and they weigh me at each exam. I’m working on an eating regimim where the very act of eating makes you lose weight. Right now, after reading you blog, I can’t wait for St. Patty’s Day. Chocolate Mint Oreos here I come.

Fall is here! 47ยฐ this morning and I’ve put away the shorts and gone to jeans. I knew I shouldn’t have shaved my legs!
