Italian Soda

Prep 5 minutes
Servings 1 drink

What happens when you add flavored syrup and a splash of cream to boring club soda? You get a creamy, refreshing Italian soda! This is one of my favorite summer drinks for sipping. It’s also fun to set up a soda bar for gatherings with different flavored syrups and let everyone make their own.

If you’ve never had Italian soda, you’re in for a treat! All you need is flavored syrup (I used strawberry in this recipe), club soda, and heavy cream. Stir them together over ice and you have a creamy, fruit drink. I recommend experimenting with different syrup flavors – I included a list of some favorites below.

Helpful Tips

  • Measuring the syrup. If you are using Torani syrup with their pumps, 3 tablespoons is equal to about six pumps of syrup. Other brands may be different.
  • Pebble ice. I like to use pebble ice in my Italian sodas. You can get pebble ice at Sonic, Chick-fil-A, and some gas stations.
  • Adding cream to Italian soda. Technically, an Italian soda is not made with cream. When you add cream, it is a French Soda. But also, Italian sodas are not from Italy. They originated here in the United States. Torani, an Italian family, is credited for the drink.
  • Non-dairy options. Some dairy-free creamy substitutes you can use are oat milk, coconut milk, or almond milk.

Make An Italian Soda Bar

One really fun thing to do at a party or get-together is host an Italian soda bar. Here’s how to do it:

  • Prep. Make some cute signs for the table. Buy some pumps for the bottles. (I like these ones.) Use paper cups, straws, and CHILL your sparkling soda.
  • Offer various flavor combos. There are so many different Italian soda flavors to try! Some of the ones we find especially delicious are:
    • pineapple and coconut
    • cherry and lime
    • peach and mango
    • pomegranate and lime
    • strawberry and lemon
    • coconut and strawberry
    • mint and lime
  • Set up an assembly line format. Explain beforehand how it works, maybe even make a few signs with measurements. Have the table set up in assembly line format with syrups first, then ice, soda, and toppings. Let them go at it and try all their own combinations.
  • Offer some garnishes. Garnishes can be maraschino cherries, limes, lemons, or pineapple, depending on the drink flavor.
