5 STAR REVIEWS

When it comes to cozy, comforting, quick and easy meals, you just can’t beat a sloppy joe. These messy sandwiches with a side of chips always hit the spot, anytime, all year round – and with just 20 minutes and barely any clean up, they’re always on stand-by at my house.

These Philly Cheesesteak Sloppy Joes are a super delicious twist on my popular classic sloppy joes recipe, made with onion, bell peppers, onions, and cheese to mimic the flavors of a Philly cheesesteak. They are crazy yummy and loved by everyone!

Helpful Tips & Variations

  • The vegetables. Onions, green bell pepper, and mushrooms add flavor and texture for a more substantial filling and help mimic a Philly cheesesteak.
  • Taco seasoning, really? I know it sounds weird, and yes, I know it’s not an ingredient in Philly cheesesteaks. But it’s really just a seasoning blend that adds great flavor. It works, trust me! (Read all the positive reviews below.)
  • Use a different protein or broth. It will have a different flavor of course, but the ground beef can be replaced with ground turkey or ground chicken if desired. And chicken or vegetable broth can be used in place of the beef broth.
  • Like things spicy? If you want the mixture to have some heat, add in some chopped jalapeรฑos or red pepper flakes.
  • Skip the bun. Instead of a bun, top a baked potato with the sloppy Joe mixture. Yummy!

  • Give the broth and cornstarch a quick stir and add it to the skillet; simmer for about 3 minutes, stirring occasionally, until mixture thickens slightly.
  • Scoop some mixture onto buns, top with 1/4 cup cheese, and stick under the broiler until melted-keep a close eye, so nothing burns! (Alternatively, you can simply add the cheese in with the meat mixture and stir until combined and melted.)

Taco seasoning, really? I know this is not an ingredient in Philly cheesesteaks and it might sound odd. But it’s really just a seasoning blend that adds great flavor to this recipe. It works, trust me! (Read all the positive reviews below.)
Use a different protein or broth. If necessary, you can swap in ground turkey or ground chicken for the ground beef, and chicken or veggie broth for the beef broth. It will have a different flavor of course, but still good.
Add some heat. If you want the mixture to have some heat, add in some chopped jalapeรฑos or red pepper flakes.

  2. Add the sauce ingredients. Stir in 2ย tablespoons each ketchup and Worcestershire, 2ย teaspoons taco seasoning, and 1/4 teaspoon each salt and pepper. Whisk together 1 teaspoon cornstarch and 1/2ย cupย low sodium beef broth and add it in. Simmer for a few minutes until mixture thickens slightly.
  3. Assemble the sloppy joes. Scoop some mixture onto hamburger buns, top with the shredded sharp white cheddar or monterey jack cheese, and stick under the broiler for a minute until melted. Proper Storage

Once assembled, the sloppy joe sandwiches should be enjoyed immediately, as the bread will become soggy. But, you can definitely store the beef mixture.

  • Fridge. Store leftover Philly sloppy joe mixture in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 4 days.
  • Reheat. Reheat the beef mixture in the microwave or on the stovetop until warmed through, then assemble the sandwich and enjoy!
  • Freeze. Make sure the cooked beef mixture is completely cooled, then add to freezer-safe containers (the entire batch or individual portions) and freeze for up to 2 months. Thaw overnight in the refrigerator and reheat before serving.

I really enjoyed this recipe. It is delicious. I was hoping to use the nutrition facts but they are absolutely incorrect. That part is annoying.

So easy and delicious. I toasted both sides of the buns, and used sliced cheese on top as it adhered better to the pile-o-meat!

My husband loved this. I added my husband’s home-grown, canned candied jalapeรฑos! “Keep on the rotation” he said. As with many of your recipes, Amy, your recipes are my ‘go-to’ for many dinners . Thank you!

My husband is a Philly cheesesteak snob and was hesitant about this recipe as a concept. But oh man! This was fantastic. We had it with fries and ended up having some leftover meat mixture that we had on top. Will definitely be adding this to the rotation.

I used chuck eye steak instead of ground beef because I can’t eat ground beef. I also used Hawaiian rolls and added mushrooms. Other than that I stuck to the recipe…it was really delicious! My husband said he has a new favorite meal, thanks!!

Made this tonight and instead of a sandwich we put over tater tots that we cooked then put the cheese on top and put under broiler until melted and browned. Was delicious! I also used beef bouillon so I omitted the extra salt and put jalapenos in it.

This recipe was delicious!! Switched it up a bit and used ground chicken instead of beef coz thatโ€™s what I had on hand. And melted provolone cheese under the broiler. So my fiancรฉ and I devoured these sloppy Joeโ€™s and he had seconds. Thank you for the recipe!!

Made this tonight as written + half a block of cream cheese melted in (we like that with our Phillys), and it was excellent! The men folk had buns and I had it over a baked potato (I’m sans gluten). Both ways were stellar. My compliments on this recipe! It will now be in regular rotation here!

So good! Iโ€™m on a low sodium diet so I omitted the salt, used half the cheese, and used Hawaiian King buns. Still tons of flavor and would be great on a naked potato too!

This was surprisingly good. I was skeptical about adding the taco seasoning, but you said trust me so I did. You’re right it does work. I usually make the recipe as written first before I make any tweaks to suit my taste, but I won’t be making any changes to this and I will definitely make these again. My BF really like them too. Thanks for posting such an unexpected delight.

This sounds so good. Everything is better with cream cheese. Most people think you can’t freeze it, as it crumbles when thawed. But if it’s used in recipes where it gets heated, it works great! Thanks for the recipe. I pinned it!

I loved it! I’m single so I cut the recipe in half – that way I can eat on it for a couple of days but not have too much. Anyway, I at a sandwich and thought – that’s pretty good but I may not make this again. THEN I was craving more a 5 or 6 hours later – that’s when I knew this was a keeper recipe! Well, I had that 2nd sandwich and still a bit more for later!!

I used Kaiser Rolls & Swiss Cheese – with your meat sauce! I just had to let you know I found it really good!

I made this last weekend. My husband fell in love with this. He took the leftovers to work the next day and the guys LOVED it too. I added beef stock and used beef stew seasoning and also used provolone cheese. I used fresh baked hoagie rolls and hollowed out the bottoms in order to fit more of the filling in. I served them open faced like some of you also did. Thank you so much for this recipe! Huge hit!
