Easy Instant Pot Steel Cut Oats
Peaches and cream steel cut oats make a delicious, hearty sweet treat of a breakfast, and cooking steel cut oats in the Instant Pot yields perfect results every time. Not too mushy, not too chewy, and just the right texture.
Another thing to love about this recipe? The Instant Pot does all the work! Just mix everything in the pressure cooker, turn it on, go get ready for work, and come back about 30 minutes later for a hot breakfast to power you through your day!
This recipe makes 6 servings, so I almost always have leftovers, which makes breakfast the next day even quicker and easier.

Ingredients Needed
Here are the few ingredients needed for this easy Instant Pot breakfast.
(Scroll below to the printable recipe card for details and measurements.)
- Traditional steel cut oats – No substitution for this recipe!
- Canned peaches – Diced or sliced both work. I used light syrup but use whatever syrup sweetness level you prefer.
- Water
- Almond milk – Coconut or soy milk are also good options. Dairy milk sometimes scorches in the instant pot so it’s best to use non-dairy milk.
- Vanilla extract – For flavor.
- Light brown sugar – Sweetens the oats just the right amount.
- Cinnamon – Adds some warm flavor.
- Salt – Enhances the other flavors.
- Peach preserves – Optional, but adds a lot of peach flavor to the oats.
- Butter – For richness and flavor.
- Heavy cream – You can also use half-n-half. Creates the “cream” portion of “peaches and cream”.
- Fresh peach slices – Optional, for serving.
A Few Notes on Steel Cut Oats
Here are a few important things to keep in mind about the oats when making this instant pot steel cut oatmeal.
Steel cut oats come in traditional, or quick-cooking. This recipe was developed using traditional. Rolled oats, which are pressed flat, are not the same and will not work for this recipe.
Steel cut oats have more nutrients than rolled oats because they are still in their natural form. They will also keep you full longer.
They have a very rich, earthy flavor. The texture is firm and chewy, and quite pleasing!

Recipe Variations
Here are a few ways to adjust the taste and sweetness of your peaches and cream oatmeal.
- Adjust the sweetness level. For added sweetness, use peaches in heavy syrup. For less sweetness, use peaches in extra light syrup, or unsweetened.
- Add more peach flavor. If you are craving that ultra-sweet artificial peaches & cream flavor from the microwave packets, try adding a teaspoon of Torani peach flavored syrup to your bowl if you have it on hand.
- Can I use something besides almond milk? Dairy milk can scorch in the Instant Pot, that’s why this recipe was developed with dairy-free almond milk. Coconut or soy milk will work, as well. You can also cook oats in just water, but it won’t be as flavorful.
- Add some nuts. Try adding chopped almonds, pecans, or walnuts for extra crunch.
- Make it extra filling. Mix in plain protein powder after cooking for extra protein and long-burning energy.

How to Make Instant Pot Steel Cut Oatmeal
There are just about 5 minutes of prep for these oats – the instant pot does the rest! Here’s a summary:
(Scroll below to the printable recipe card for details and measurements.)
- Drain the peaches. There should be 1/2 cup of liquid. If it’s less, add water or milk to reach 1/2 cup. Chop the peaches if you’re using sliced ones and set them aside.
- Prepare the preserves. Microwave the peach preserves until they liquefy.
- Combine the ingredients. Pour the peach can liquid, water, and almond milk into the pressure cooker. Add the steel cut oats, vanilla, brown sugar, cinnamon, salt, and preserves. Stir.
- Cook. Pressure cook on high for 4 minutes, then allow it to naturally pressure release for 30 minutes.
- Add the remaining ingredients. Stir in the butter and canned peaches, then the heavy cream. Taste test and add a pinch of salt or sweetener if needed.
- Enjoy. Serve hot with fresh peaches.
What Instant Pot Should I Use?
I used my 6-quart Instant Pot for this recipe. If you have a smaller model, you should halve the recipe. If you use an 8-quart model, reduce the pressure cooking time by 1 minute to make up for the extra surface area in the pot.

Serving Suggestions
I serve my peaches and cream oatmeal topped with some fresh peaches when in season. You can add a sprinkle of cinnamon and/or brown sugar if desired as well, for some extra flavor. If you like your oatmeal with extra liquid, add a splash of milk or more cream when serving.
How to Store & Reheat Leftovers
- How to store leftovers. Since this recipe makes 6 servings, you may have some leftovers. Just store them in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 2 days.
- How to reheat leftovers. Place them in a microwave-safe bowl with a splash of milk. Cover with a damp paper towel and microwave for 60 seconds or until hot. Alternately, warm on the stovetop in a covered saucepan with a splash of milk, stirring frequently.

Instant Pot Peaches and Cream Oatmeal
Ingredients
- 15 ounces canned peaches in light syrup (diced or sliced)
- 2 cups water
- 1 1/2 cups almond milk (or coconut milk or soy milk)
- 2 cups traditional steel cut oats (no substitution!)
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 3 tablespoons packed light brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 cup peach preserves (optional, but recommended)
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 1/2 cup heavy cream (or half and half)
- for serving: fresh peach slices
Instructions
- Drain the peaches into a measuring cup – you should have about 1/2 cup of liquid. If it’s less than 1/2 cup, add water or milk to the measuring cup until it reaches 1/2 cup. Roughly chop the peaches if using canned sliced peaches, set chopped peaches aside.
- Place the peach preserves in a microwave safe bowl and microwave unti it liquifies, about 20 seconds. This will help it mix into the oats.
- Pour the peach can liquid, water, and almond milk into a 6 quart instant pot pressure cooker. Add the steel cut oats, vanilla, brown sugar, cinnamon, salt, and preserves. Stir well.
- Secure the lid onto the pot, and place the valve in the ‘sealing’ position. Pressure cook on high for 4 minutes, then allow the cooker to naturally pressure release for 30 minutes. Release any remaining pressure.
- Add the butter and canned peaches and stir with a large fork. Add in the heavy cream and stir briefly.
- Taste for salt and sweetness, adjust if needed. If you’d like it sweeter, add a teaspoon at a time of either white sugar, brown sugar, maple syrup, or honey until your desired level of sweetness is reached.
- Serve hot, garnished with fresh peaches if desired.
