If you’ve ever wanted to try a Dirty Soda but don’t have a soda shop nearby, this homemade version is about to change your life. I make mine with Dr. Pepper, coconut crème coffee creamer, fresh lime juice, and ice, so you get the creamy coconut-lime flavor without hunting down flavored syrups. It’s sweet, fizzy, nonalcoholic, refreshing, and so unbelievably good it’ll keep you going back for another sip!

Dirty soda is basically soda dressed up with cream, flavorings, citrus, or fruit. It’s often associated with Swig (the Utah soda shop chain), and got even more attention once it took off on TikTok. The “dirty” part comes from adding those creamy, flavored extras to regular soda, and this dirty Dr. Pepper keeps the idea extra simple.
Instead of using separate ingredients for flavor and creaminess (usually coconut syrup plus half-and-half), I make mine with coconut crème coffee creamer to cover both in one ingredient. The lime juice is important, too, because it cuts through the sweetness and gives the drink a tangy finish. This dirty soda is creamy like a root beer float, but fizzier and brighter, with a coconut Dr. Pepper flavor that makes it so irresistible to drink!
Helpful Tips and Variations
- Use lots of ice. Nugget ice is my favorite here because it’s chewy, crunchy, chills the soda quickly, and gives this drink the best soda shop feel. But crushed ice or regular cubes totally work, too! A cold glass and plenty of ice help keep the soda fizzy and refreshing.
- Use fresh lime juice. Bottled lime juice can work in a pinch, but fresh lime gives the drink a brighter flavor that can’t be beat. One large lime should give you about 2 tablespoons of juice (extra tip: room temperature limes yield more juice than cold ones!)
- Stir gently. You want the creamer, lime, and soda to mix, but don’t stir so much that you knock out all the bubbles. A few gentle swirls with a straw or spoon is enough.
- Make it lighter. Go ahead and swap the regular Dr. Pepper for Diet Dr. Pepper and use zero sugar coconut crème coffee creamer for a lower calorie option if that’s your preference.
- Swap the creamer. Coconut is the classic flavoring for dirty sodas, but vanilla coffee creamer would also be great.
- Want it boozy? Coconut Rum or Amaretto pair really well with Dr. Pepper, if you want to add some alcohol.
- Don’t like Dr. Pepper? If Dr. Pepper isn’t your thing, Coke, Diet Coke, or Pepsi are delicious in this recipe, too. I personally love Dr. Pepper here because its cherry-vanilla flavor is so good with the creamy coconut and fresh lime.

How to Make Dirty Soda Step by Step

Gather all of your ingredients.

Add the ice: Fill a 16-oz. pint glass halfway with ice cubes, preferably nugget ice if you have it. It chills the soda fast and makes the drink feel more like something you’d get from a soda shop, but regular ice cubes work just fine.

Add the soda: Pour in one 12-oz. can of Dr. Pepper, filling the glass about ¾ full so there’s room for the creamer and lime juice.

Make it dirty: Add ¼ cup coconut crème coffee creamer to the soda.

Then pour in the juice from 1 large lime, about 2 Tbsp.

Combine and serve: Stir gently until the coconut creamer and lime juice are mixed into the Dr. Pepper. The drink should look creamy and combined. Don’t over-stir; just a few slow swirls are enough to bring everything together without flattening the soda.
Garnish with a maraschino cherry and a lime wedge. Serve immediately with a straw while it’s cold, creamy, and fizzy. Enjoy!

Serving Suggestions
This recipe makes one drink (in a 16-oz. glass), which is perfect for an afternoon treat. It’s also a fun nonalcoholic option for movie nights, cookouts, baby showers, or anytime you want a playful drink without mixing a cocktail! I love this dirty soda on its own, but I also love snacks. If you want to recreate a soda shop-style spread at home, serve it with warm soft pretzels and cheese dip or frosted sugar cookies!
If you’re making dirty sodas for a party, set out chilled cans of soda, lime wedges, cherries, coconut creamer, straws, and plenty of ice so everyone can mix their own drink.
Make Ahead and Storing Leftovers
This Dr. Pepper dirty soda is best made and enjoyed right away. The soda starts losing carbonation once it’s poured, and the creamer will separate in the soda over time. I don’t recommend making more than you’ll enjoy at once. If you’re serving a crowd, keep the ingredients separate and mix each drink to order.
