Are you familiar with layering? And no, I don’t mean with scarves, sweaters, and jackets in the winter! HA. I mean in cooking. Layering flavor is a technique that any worthy chef uses, and any home cook can, too. Easily. It’s all about combining and deepening flavors in a dish with spices, liquids, vegetables, and meats.
Say, for instance, you sauté some onions in olive oil. Ok, yum. But how much better and richer would they be if you also added in some butter, pepper, and an herb? Way better. The second option layers in more flavor. The great thing about this technique is that it can be applied to the fanciest of meals, or the most basic ones.
My favorite ways of layering in flavor are by seasoning every element of the dish, using a chicken or vegetable stock instead of water, and incorporating in some citrus juice or zest, which can perk up your taste buds!
