There has been a big ‘ol debate a brewin’ over here the past
few weeks 8 years.
Fake tree or real tree.
Oh yes. Conversations have been had. Nasty words have been uttered. Tears shed. Fists have been thrown. Nights have been sleepless.
Ah, I kid. Sort of. No fists, I swear. But boy, there is a divide. I even posed the question on Facebook and apparently the entire country is split! Can’t we all just get along?
Paul’s a purist, having grown up with a real tree. Not one ever the same, with that fresh pine smell. Authentic. I get it, I do. But I also loathe having to wait halfway into December to decorate OR buy too early and then spend weeks watering and cleaning up pine needles.
Well, I finally wore him down. As only I can. It’s a gift.
So, the tree went up last weekend. Yay! It’s sparkly and bright and fun. Aaaaaand, I made him Christmas cookies…so he’d stop crying ;-)
(Christmas) Italian Sugar Cookies
Prep time: 20 minutes
Cook time: 10 minutes
Finish time: 15 minutes
• 3 cups all-purpose flour
• 3 teaspoons baking powder
• 1/8 teaspoon salt
• 3/4 cup shortening
• 3/4 cup granulated sugar
• 3 eggs
• 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
• 1/4 cup milk
• 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
• 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
• 2 1/2 cups powdered sugar
• Red and green food coloring
Preheat oven to 400.
In a medium bowl whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt.
In a large bowl, beat shortening and sugar together until light and fluffy. Add in eggs and vanilla. Gradually add in the flour mixture until combined.
Shape dough into 1 1/2 inch balls. Place on a nonstick cookie sheet 1 inch apart. Bake for 8-10 minutes or until lightly browned. Remove to wire racks to cool.
For icing, in a small bowl, combine the milk, butter, vanilla and powdered sugar until smooth. Divide in half to two bowls and tint one bowl with the red food coloring, the other with the green. Dip the tops of cookies in icing; allow excess to drip off. Sprinkle with colored sugar if desired. Place on waxed paper; let stand until set.
